Shirataki Noodles
23 Feb 2014, 14:37
I tried something new this week that I wanted to share. I've been doing 5:2 since about November. I eat a small high protein breakfast and then eat the rest of my calories at dinner. I do fine during the day, but I usually still feel hungry after dinner. Well this Thurs. was the first time I fasted and stuck to exactly 500 calories.

I believe it was due to the Tofu Shirataki Noodles I used in a tuna casserole.

Here in the U.S. we have someone called Hungry Girl. She has a lot of cookbooks and tries to help you make low cal food that is like the full fat versions you enjoy. I bought her 300 under 300 recipes once I started this WOE. One of things she is always recommending is these Shirataki noodles.

So, I finally tried them (after finally finding them!) They are very easy to make and very filling. Now they are not EXACTLY like regular noodles and they are a little weird at first. But, they are ok and like I said VERY filling! My whole dish was 275 calories and I was not hungry at all afterwards. I will probably continue to have them on most of my fast days.

Just wanted to share!

Glad you like them we've discussed these interesting things several times before. Check out slim noodles, barenaked noodles using the search facility on the right of the home page.

I have to say that I hate them immensely, Moogie and I both find them too hard, some others find them too fishy. I know Sian loves them.
So if you are that keen wait until holland and Barrett have a Penny sale and load up with them then.
Makes me shudder just thinking about them . Bleughhhhhhh.
A cheaper alternative is to ribbon courgettes instead. Just a thought. I just wish they'd change the texture, :like:

Thanks @cblasz. Online I found some Canadian grocery stores that have them and am going out today (also a fast day for me) to get some. I am also doing low carb with 5:2 and have totally given up pasta even though I love it. This may be a good substitute :like:

Caroline - I had searched on Shirataki noodles and didn't find anything, so figured I'd share. Did you try the Tofu ones? They have 20 calories, but are supposedly better than the regular ones. They weren't hard at all and after rinsing them I didn't think they had a fishy smell.

I am from the U.S. so I don't have a Holland and Barrett! They were only 2 dollars though at my store.

I hope you like them Judith! Remember they are definitely not the same as real pasta, but good for a fast day!

There are several different makes & my favourites are Zero Noodles I (weirdly) prefer them to pasta or rice now

I can't get them over here in France so I have to get them sent from Holland & Barrets in the UK, my Beloved was in the UK last week & they were on promo so he bought out the stocks in 2 different shops & came home with 40 packets  mind you that'll only last me about 3 months!

The trick is to rinse them REALLY well to get rid of the fishy smell/taste - I rinse them on luke-warm water for a couple of minutes then leave them soaking for at least another 5, the put them do drain for a few minutes before cooking in boiling water for 4 minutes. The other trick is to have them with something that has quite a strong flavour.

They have several names @cblasz like I said I'm glad you found them, our equivalents are a big pricey in my opinion.
And were all different. We have slim noodles, bare naked noodles, I've even tried some from an Asian store several years ago. Name unpronounceable. I think all the ones I've tried were shirataki based ones. They will undoubtedly aid your weight loss.

No wonder I didn't find them when I searched, the search on the top right is not working!!! Well, maybe my post will still be helpful for newer people!

I like them. They soak up strong sauces like spicy tomato, asian (tamari) and mushroom with oyster sauce. In the UK, I used Slim Pasta (which I used to buy in bulk on Amazon when it came on sale), but in the US I use House Foods Shirataki (in Whole Foods). I don't like the tofu ones though

I like them in a stirfry, well rinsed. I use the pasta ones as noodles, I wouldn't use them as pasta though.

Yes, that's the brand I use Karen. I was able to find it in my regular grocery store. Hungry Girl recommended the tofu ones, but I maybe I'll give the other ones a try too!!

i went hunting for shiritaki noodles in the early days when i was enthusiastically embracing this lifestyle for the first time and thought id find them in Asian stores. the Chinese and Indian/Sri Lankan ones look at you strangely when you say shiritake or yam noodles or show them a picture on your mobile phones. Weeks later i found them in Woollies in the health food area as opposed to the Asian noodle area. I found them expensive and how can i say strange.

So after doing some study of calories I found the rice noodle, common ones not bad at all in calorie and if you limit the quantity they are perfectly fine for a fast day. Well in my opinion anyway.

I did find Japanese Soba and somen noodles in asian stores and asian sections of grocery stores to be somewhere between rice noodles and shiritake noodles in calories and are a good compromise

Thanks @cblasz I tried the noodles yesterday in the Fettuccine Hungry Girlfredo recipe on their website. It was pretty good and a huge plate of food for 100 cal. Thanks all ( @AnnieD ) for advice on preparing (dry, dry, dry them....did I mention to dry them? ) Will get more to have around for fast days.

I do buy them at an Asian grocery for much cheaper than anywhere else. On another forum someone emphasized that boiling them for 5 minutes and then "dry frying" them until they kind if squeak when you stir them vastly improves the taste and texture, so I always do that. I was eating them every fast day with an Asian style sauce until I got tired of them. Now I eat them occasionally. Sometimes I just put them in chicken broth.
