Sashimi
04 Apr 2013, 21:48
Fasting today and wound up having sashimi for lunch instead of what I'd planned. I can't seem to figure out the calories, as any sites I've looked at list it by oz and I don't know how many ounces were in my lunch! I'm talking about a typical sashimi lunch special, with a few pieces of tuna, salmon, some white fish and no rice. My fitness pal lists everything from 30 cal to 500 cal.
Any ideas for a calorie count?

A rough idea of how many pieces of each fish would probably help since the overall calorie count will vary. Salmon has more calories than tuna which has more than some white fish but less than mackerel etc.

I'd say that a 6 set piece of sashimi (assuming it's a cm thick and say 7cm x 3cm) is around 150-200 calories (lower if it's 2 salmon and on the higher side if it's more salmon and other more oily fish). Any salad in there - I know my local sushi bar tends to toss in some soy-roasted pumpkin seeds that bump up the count a little.

This is interesting. I've had sashimi for dinner on a few fast days. In The Book, it says 3-5 pieces of tuna or salmon is ~100g (I don't have the book handy, so that is from my somewhat deficient memory). I started weighing out the pieces in the sashimi packet I bought, and ~10 pieces was only 70g. I was convinced my scales were badly off and started to calibrate them with objects of known weight. But obviously the piece size matters. I live in Japan, and evidently, they make much smaller pieces of sashimi here! I would guess they are 2x3cm and maybe 0.5cm thick. So based on the above size, it all makes sense now...

The sashimi here is divine. I try not to eat it often (for mercury and ethical reasons), but it is so frickin' yummy it is hard to stay away...particularly when dieting!

Oh I bet your sashimi is delicious! It seems like such a good idea on a fast day, no carbs and I seem to want salty things when I'm fasting. The book does mention sashimi as being 352 calories but, like I said, I wasn't sure of the portions. I see why so many people choose the prepared foods with calorie counts on the box!
