I have come to Barter Books, a huge and unique secondhand bookshop in Alnwick, to plot my next move. It was founded 20 years ago by a MidWesterner and an Englishman, and has the best characteristics of both countries!! See pics and website!

I am in the Old Waiting Room (Barter Books is situated in the former Alnwick railway station) which as you can see in the top pic is very comfortable - roaring fire, lloyd loom chairs, free wifi, good coffee ... and that indispensible bottle of tomato ketchup to go on your bacon buttie or sausage sarnie from the Station Buffet ...
What a fascinating website-I hope the place inspires you!
It is a very comforting, quirky and original place Merlin - and I recommend a visit if ever anyone is in the area. They have all sorts of books, including cookbooks - I found a used copy of Moro here for a couple of pounds!
That looks exactly like my sort of book shop Silverdarling. I can happily imagine myself spending hours on a cold, wintry day just browsing, picking books off the shelves to dip into, making new and old discoveries...sheer bliss! And as for hubby I'd have to literally drag him out by the scruff of the neck!
:like:
Bought my copy of "Wrinkles in Time" by George Smoot there many years ago whilst on holiday, staying in Wooler. A wonderful shop, highly recommended!
What a delightful shop, I could happily get lost in there for a couple of days. Interesting video too, thank you Silverdarling.
That looks so cool!
There was a wonderful second hand book shop on Hong Kong called Flow. No coffee or aunt Ning but three higgeldy piggelty floors stuffed with books of every description. Loved it and sure I would love this one too.
*sigh*
@janeg - it's near enough for a side trip when you're next home
It is indeed silver. On t'road to 'uddersfield fae Glaschu!
Hi SD, glad to see you in fine freckle and in such an interesting place, must put it on my list, love books, fires, coffee and and bacon butties so this will be paradise, thanks for the fab pictures,

Ballerina x
Is that you SD all cozy near the fire? Fingers a blur on the keyboard?
I can deffo imagine spending some quality time in there, having a good old browse ! X
It's a great place with well priced books and lovely food. I always visit when I'm in the area and while away a good few hours. Itrust that you enjoyed yourself.

@CandiceMarie - not me, I was lurking to the right trying to avoid being seen in the mirror while taking the pic on the ipad!
What a super little video! Thanks Silverdarling for sharing this. When we plan our next trip "up north" this shop will be a destination on the route for sure.

By the way, the copy of Gone Girl eventually did turn up so I'm catching up with you all and greatly enjoying Part One.
One of my favourite places too! Lots of our B&B guests head up there whilst staying with us at http://www.middlestobswood.co.uk

We have already welcomed some 5:2 forumers who stayed with us during the summer and it would be lovely to meet more of you. We promise no diet breakfasts, though there is always fresh fruit available. You are allowed to indulge on holiday
