Big life decision and C25K
28 Mar 2014, 00:18
This is a little off topic, but I need to share! I've just applied for a job in Seattle - 3000 miles from where I live now. I have friends that live out there and I've been there 5 or 6 times and loved it every time and always thought I might like to move there. I considered it in my 20s but my family didn't really want me to go and I just decided that I couldn't leave my family. But now, almost 20 years later, a lot of my family has moved including my parents and sister and also some of my friends.

I wasn't necessarily looking for a job, but I came across this job that seems like it could be amazing and it's in Seattle. So, I applied and now I have a phone interview tomorrow. I'm am scared to death, not so much of the interview, but such a HUGE life change. I've lived in CT my whole life!

So what does this have to do with C25K?? Well, as I was doing W3D2 today, which involves running for 2 three minute intervals, I thought about how right now I can't imagine running a full 3 miles. But, you can't think that far ahead, you have to just worry about the week and day that you are on and trust that the program will work.

And so I have to do the same with this. I can't think about everything involved with moving across the country. I have to just take it one step at a time - first I applied and tomorrow I will do the phone interview. It may not even go further than that!

Thanks for letting me share and would be happy to hear of any other major life changes that worked out just fine!

Good luck with the interview, cblasz!

I've never been to Seattle, but everyone I know who has lived there really loves it! As someone who has moved across oceans several times, it's big and scary, but also a great adventure! The move itself just requires organization (lots of lists!).

As for running 5k… as you say, just take it a day at a time. Back when I first started running as an adult, I never really followed a program. I just got out there and ran the best I could. The distance increase came pretty naturally. It always helped to run someplace beautiful, along the river in NYC, in the moors outside of Sheffield (I exaggerate slightly--I never really made it out of Rivelin Valley), anywhere with a sea view in Okinawa.

My hubby and I moved 4 hours away from all our family and friends about 6 years ago now. Both of us got good jobs in the new location so we moved. 6 years on I am glad we moved. Sure, life is life and some times its tough, but we have had great times here too. The thing I miss most though are my friends and family. I would have moved in a heartbeat if a good job was towards the people I love.

Regarding the c25k, go for it. I woulnt have run across the street 6 weeks ago. I am going to do a 25min run in the morning!

Good luck with the interview. Perhaps leave it to fate!

"In the end, we only regret the chances we didn't take". Go for it :)

Good luck on the C25k too.

Thanks everyone! I'm not worried about the 5K at all! but, just realized that I need to approach this situation in the same way!

MaryAnn - I'm definitely not worried about the actual physical move, just the impact it would have. I do have some logistics to deal with, like a condo to sell, but I can figure all that out!

Scubachick - I wish Seattle was only 4 hours away. I would've moved there years ago. But, it's almost 6 hours by plane!! And I am kinda leaving it to fate. I think it was sort of fate that I even saw the job posting and I will just see what happens!

Very true Mary Lynn! If for some reason it didn't work out, I could always come back.

yes, get the job first. Then decide if you want to move to Seattle. Leave it in the hands of God. Meanwhile, good luck with the interview.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
Take a deep breath and go for it. And that applies to everything a tad scary in life.
Very best of luck with both. The running programme is very good as it kind of sneaks up on you when you're not expecting it and all of a sudden you're running further than you ever thought you could.
:clover: my fingers are all crossed for you.

Well, the phone call went ok. It was very informal and he said they'll let me know if they want to move onto the next step. So I will wait and see!

Thanks again for all the encouragement!

In a long life-time of several big changes, I can see that some work out well and some don't. But every single one presents opportunities to learn something valuable and to have that new knowledge in one's toolbox to apply to subsequent life.

It can take courage, though, but I'm betting you have it!

Hope it went well your interview, just to say I moved from the Uk to Seattle 9 yrs ago, with my boyfriend now husband, leaving all our families and friends back in the Uk. It was only going to be for a year or two and we are still here. Just as you said take each step at a time, things do fall into place. What an exciting time for you.

I have always lived remote from family, you make friends and form your own networks. Follow your dream I say as it enlarges your world. You can always visit family and they you. All the best with the job.
