Can anyone help please?
01 Feb 2014, 20:16
My laptop is not even 2 years old and has started turning itself off. It runs quite warm and I don't know why.
This is a recent thing and it's driving me mad. I've taken the battery out and am just running it via the main power supply, but that's made no difference.
Has anyone got any suggestiins please....many thanks if you can help.

Does it shut off while you are using it or when it's been idle for a few minutes? If the latter then check the power-saving timer. If the former, I haven't a clue. :)

Carefully take the back off and clean out the fan and any dust you find in there.

Edit, unplug and take the battery out first.

hi Penny

My laptop did the same and i coudnt understand why, until i realised the plug from the cable, the bit that goes into the side of the laptop was damaged from being bent all the time, when that comes off it switches to battery mode which eventually dies, so i got a new cable from Amazon and bingo, fixed!
Hope that is all it is, there should also be a little light somewhere on your keyboard, it should be lit white and not orange... Have a check!! Good luck x

Have you run a virus checker on it or spybot or something? It might be running hot because there's something fishy going on.

Thanks all.
I have spent the last hour with head torch and screwdrivers and cleaned the fan with mini Dyson.
Thanks Julie and everyone who's suggested resolutions.
It's working now and I'll see how long it lasts before it dies again - hopefully, it won't!

To help with overheating invest in some laptop feet, or even some thimbles and raise the laptop up off whatever surface its one. Actually using a laptop, on your lap without a flat hard surface under it will cause overheating, as your trousers or skirt will be blocking the air vents needed to keep it cool. Investing in a lap tray (flat tray with a bean bag glued to the underneath) will help a lot.
