Day out...
05 Aug 2013, 19:02
Hi

I'm posting a few pics of a day out on the Wirral on Friday.

Fort Perch Rock is a most interesting venue so I thought I should support it.

Thanks it's a pity they've lost the right hand side or they would have been better!

It's a place called Fort Perch Rock which is to be found on the end of the Wirral peninsula, which is the other side of the Mersey (I suppose!) from Liverpool.

It has been an important strategic fortification since about 1850 to guard the Liverpool docks area.

An Anderson shelter is what you would have dived into during an air raid in the 2 WW. Most families had them in vulnerable areas. My Dad did because he was in Birmingham at that time and my Mum did as she was living in London during the war.

You would have Had to dug out you back garden and installed this thing with corrugated iron.

My Dad was saying they never spent much time in them as my Gran (ie Dad's Mum)regarded them as so damp and nasty they were a health hazard themselves. My Mum's mum was quoted as saying if she was going to peg out she was going to do it in a degree of comfort.

Joking aside, the museum brought home one or two of the horrors of war...... pictures of town houses completely razed......the one either aside still intact. My Dad can recall at the school register "Norman won't be in today as his house got bombed last night". ie Norman wasn't coming back......

Thetwo guys who were acting as wardens come guides wee sointeesting........and interested.....in the elecrtonics installed (radar and such like) we had difficulty getting rid of them!!

They only charged £3 to get inand I do feel the sort of attraction deserves a punt.

You need to use them or youll loose them which would be a shame.

I live on the Wirral and it is indeed the other side of the Mersey from Liverpool. New Brighton is also worth a visit. I remember seeing the Wirral on the first coast series and thinking how lovely it looked. I was living in Yorkshire at the time. I never thought I would end up living here! Hubby's job moved from Bradford to Liverpool. Much as I love it tho my heart is still in Yorkshire!

We have never done Wirral until this year when we happily saw relatives and but also had a funeral but what an amazing place. We had had a really good time seeing the statues on the beach. I really wish I lived closer

Thank you David. Those were terrible times. I'm glad I wasn't even thought of back then! As an American I would say that we have been more fortunate in this regard. Although, one of our WW11 pilots lost over seventy years was just returned to his surviving family. The whole city stood in tribute, for 7 miles long, as his remains went by. Can you imagine after all these years. We must teach our children to be thankful to all those in the past that sacrificed so that we could have a good life today.
