Fitting Room Mirrors
14 Mar 2014, 15:22
I’ve just been browsing the shops on my lunch break and decided to try a few things on just to pass the time really in Dorothy Perkins. Now I wish I hadn’t! Is it just me or are the mirrors in some changing rooms horrendous!? I get changed in front of my mirror at home and can see the progress I’m making and how little cellulite I have now and then BAM the second I strip down in the changing rooms I’ve turned into a lumpy bumpy hippo

I left feeling so disheartened! Literally wanted to sneak back to the office unseen because I felt such a mess – surely I can’t have changed that much from 7am this morning!? I’d have thought if anything they would want you to look your best in the mirrors so that you’re more likely to buy their clothes!? I’m just wondering if it’s just me, or if anyone else finds fitting room mirrors particularly unflattering?

OMG? Sparkle, they are truly horrendous, they make me depressed for a week! I rarely venture into them
Maybe its just i cant face the truth ..or is there some evil force at work in changing rooms up and down the land .
Howver, dear sparkle, i find it hard to believe you have any probs looking in the mirror..no way are you a hippo...now me, i am a moomin thru and thru

CandiceMarie glad it's not just me! They really are so depressing. I'm hoping it's not a case of not being able to face the truth - I really hope I don't really look like that! I think there must be some sort of evil force!

I'm sure you are not a moomin, but moomins are so adorable anyway who cares if you are!

This is just one of the many reasons that I hate shopping. I always thought it was beacuse you were so close to the mirror because of the confined space, but maybe there's some evil magnification going on.

I hate them too. In fact I often try stuff on and walk out empty handed. Is it because you have to stand too close to them and then look down on yourself.
And yes moomins are adorable as are you Mrs Marie

Ha! I buy things and try them on at home and take back stuff I don't want most of the time, changing room mirrors are horrible! I tried on a pair of trousers in H&M the other day and they had three mirrors in the cubicle so that you could see yourself from all sides, not a good thing! Think I may be scarred for life from the view of my thighs and bum from the back and sides!

Yes those triple mirrors should be banned!

And don't you also hate the mirrors in the hairdressers...why do they not have quality mirrors with flattering lighting??

I call them ripple mirrors - can see all the ripples of cellulite on my thighs and bum!

My sister still tells the story of going shopping with me when I needed maternity clothes. She said there was a bloodcurdling scream from the changing room, apparently I hadn't seen myself in all my pregnant glory before! I absolutely hate changing room mirrors; too much light and your image being relected to infinity from all angles. It's a wonder anyone buys any clothes; I know I rarely do.

fitting room mirrors are guaranteed to make me feel crap about myself.

Does the lighting have something to do with it? Or is it just because it's up close? I'm sure I stand as close to my mirror at home, where I look fine.

You'd think shops - the big chains anyway - would have worked something out by now. It would gave an absolutely massive effect on sales.

I find my local BHS has the worst mirrors. They add a couple of stones not pounds!!!! Hate them with a passion,

I think the only ones where I am that are relatively Ok are at h&m. No wonder I do more Internet shopping than in store shopping! Glad it isn't just me :)

Gahhh don't start me on hairdresser mirrors
I have a mobile hairdresser and i wnt even look at myself when she's finished
I know she's done a good job
I cannot bear sitting looking at myself in the hairdressers and i HATE how they chat..

It's definitely about being in a confined space, poor lighting and we get used looking at ourselves in our mirrors at home where we feel comfortable.
Hope M&S and other stores are reading this thread  quite surprised they have missed this with all the market research they do
