Should i feel safe im in Australia?
Thats the rest of the world buggered. Anything that drastic that happens in the dear old USA sends financial tremors through the rest of the world.
It's certainly a drastic way to get your point across.
This sums it up the situation really well.

The lot of them should be tried on treason charges.
Treason? Of whom? The duly-elected representatives doing their jobs?
Duly elected is debatable as is doing their jobs.
Welcome to the Divided States of America. Where the rich get richer. The liberals keep spending money that doesn't exist and the conservatives keep crying about it. Honestly, I'm disgusted with ALL of them.
My daughter is going to Miami in 2 weeks, she want dollars as a birthday present before she goes.

Now, we have two ways to go on this. Wait a while to see if she will even be able to land in America.

Or play the markets and wait for 2 days to see how the stock market is going to play this or the American economy to crash or even wobble, so we get a better rate on dollars?

Everytime the American Government gets into a playground spat and PLAYS politics with no regard for the people they are harming and are supposed to represent, the rest of the world suffers along with their own people. But not the rich ones, they just get richer.
I wouldn't get dollars in advance - regardless of whatever is going on in politics. Unless she is withdrawing $10,000, any exchange rate differences won't be worth the fees for getting foreign currency. Just use an ATM card once you hit the states - that's what we do when we go to Europe. You can even use a credit card in many taxis nowadays.

Frankly, I'll be shocked if there's still a shutdown in two weeks. But in any case, congress acted pretty quickly to be sure air travel wouldn't be disrupted back in January when we had similar "fun"
I think it's a very fine line, talking about politics, btw.

It's one thing to say there's a shutdown, but we really don't need to devolve into any mud slinging or bad feelings. Times are difficult and this is a support forum for 5:2 diet, so lets try to keep it friendly, ok?
Whoa. And I thought Australian politics was bad.

I guess political debate always gets people firing
It happens all the time...but usually there is a reprieve at the last minute. I'm sure once it's all back to normal the markets will surge. Ho hum to it all
Love it Puny! Reminds me of one of my favorite jokes. 3 engineers are in a car, an electrical engr, a mechanical engr, and a software engr. The car stops. The electrical engr says it must be the battery. The mech engr says it must be the transmission. The software engr says "why don't we all just get out and get back in?"
cold reboot. yep that will work.

whats wrong with the health insurance idea anyway?

I always like Michael Moore's take on all things USA
