Does any country do this.

I woke up to a morning chat program here and they were discussing the problem of obesity in this country (Australia) with over 70% obese and getting worse. I know im obessed by my own weight but intersting how the problem with weight is just so prevalent in our lives. If only 1/10th of the obese people can discover 5:2 or its variants!!!

anyway they discussed the merit of candy-free supermarket aisles. i dont think they do it anywhere in Oz .. what about other countries.

Would be a very popular aisle!

also completely separate. i hate how so many supermarkets are ditching the checkout lady/men aisle for those auto pay machines. Im sure there is more theft (which reflects in our prices) and plus it takes me forever to find the bar code. Plus so many few jobs have been lost. some supermarkets have express lanes but usually only 1 or 2 or in my case teh other day, none
Do you mean lolly-free checkouts Juliana? My local supermarket (Woolworths) has had a lolly-free one for years. For me personally it doesn't make any difference but I can see how it might entice people to pick something up while they're waiting. Ultimately you yourself are responsible for yourself though, for what you buy and eat. There are temptations everywhere...
oops yes.

probably more for the parents struggling agains the demands of their children
They do this in Germany. :) Or at least in Berlin at some Kaiser's supermarkets. Instead of chocolate bars and the likes, there are some rice crackers (mostly organic stuff) and I think protein bars, not sure about that one. It's a good initiative! When I'm in the store I just want to get out as soon as possible though, don't care which aisle.
My local grocer has some candy free aisles - but then they put in beef jerky and other high fat stuff as well as more tabloid magazines! There are the self pay machines here as well, especially in the one I use most. Interestingly, Walmart had them in for a while, then took them all out! I don't know if there was more theft or what!
I used self pay machines 5 times, and they checked me 4 times... I guess I just look very suspicious!
We used to have this problem in the UK sweets right at the checkouts - not very good for mums with young children etc., etc. There was a campaign at the time which a lot of supermarkets took heed of and continue to do so today. There may be packs of mints or chewing gums at checkout tills - but not the really exciting stuff like chocolate !!!
There aren't generally any sweets at the checkout in France either, in fact as there are basically no corner shops etc the only way you can buy chocolate bars or sweets in packs of 6, which is either a very good thing or a very bad thing depending on whether you buy them or not!!

OMG - packs of 6 only - that would definitely be my downfall  If I can get out of the shop without buying chocolate I'm OK - but buy it bring it home and say "that bar's for tomorrow" - well it just ain't gonna happen is it  I'm much stronger these days but do still lapse on the odd occasion
