Magazines - do you buy them?
07 Aug 2013, 08:17
Following on from Silverdarling's book thread, I just thought it'd be interesting and fun to see what types of magazines we all buy (the titles may differ, as we're such a global bunch of people, so can you clarify what kind of mag it is, if its title doesn't make that clear).
They can be 'hard copy' or iPad versions.

Treat: Delicious Magazine/BBC Good Food

Challenge: hub's Digital Photography

Bargepole: Hello/celeb watching
I read Good Housekeeping. My mother bought me a subscription for a present a few years ago and I was hooked!
No I don't buy magazines because I read them, the OK gossipy type, at my hairdressers & they are so expensive. Last weekend we stayed in a 5 star hotel for our anniversary treat & there was a complimentary Harpers Bazaar in our room. What a load of rubbish aimed at people with more money than sense trying to identify the latest very expensive trend/bling to buy & full of advertisements. I have until recently had a subscription to Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness magazine because I am still an online member just to use the food diary & forum to record daily what I eat to keep within my TDEE. I have got used to using it & I can also record pounds & ounces in my weekly weigh in. But I have not renewed my subscription because this forum is much more informative with a great bunch of people, is free of charge & I am now a lifelong 5:2er & can communicate with like minded people my ups & downs. Much better than going to a slimming club   :clover: :like:
I subscribe to Hit & Miss, an Australian roller derby magazine, and have just started a subscription to a new magazine called Cure, which has come from an online design magazine, the first hard copy came out last month.

Then I get New Scientists out the library. Think about subscribing occasionally, but realistically a weekly mag is probably more than I'll actually get around to reading. Should probably do it through my iPad so I don't waste paper copy.
I buy Cross stitch magazines and occasionally buy Sainsburys magazine-torture on a fast day!
I stopped buying magazines ages ago when the prices started to get outrageous. They were too much of a luxury on a tight budget. :frown:

I used to like the food mags and ones with crafty stuff. The cheaper ones are just full of brainless rubbish these days and I've no time at all for celebrity gossip and stupid sensationalised stories. Now I prefer to spend my money on a paperback or the Kindle equivalent. If you keep an eye on Amazon you can often pick up a decent read for under £1. (and help the forum if you use the link! ) The only magazine I get now is the Slimming World one and I get that free as hubby used to be a consultant. He had to give up but one of his mates always sends me one of his complimentary copies. Bless him!
I use my Tesco Clubcard vouchers to get Good Housekeeping, Prima & Woman & Home.
Had the misfortune to "read" Hello! at the hairdressers the other day - never again!!
Delicious, readers Digest and Australian Women's Weekly to read at the hairdressers.
I have a subscription to "France" magazine (a UK magazine about France) and I sometimes buy issues of "Bust" magazine (tagline: for women with something to get off their chest - it's a feminist magazine with alternative fashion, crafting ideas and cool celebrities)
I have s subscription for Good Health that my sister gave me for my birthday but nothing else. I find the cost prohibitive.

An interesting question and how life has changed.

I do assure you food magazines have never entered my plans but I use to buy motoring magazines when I was +-20. they have got far too expansive now and the 'net" has taken over that part of my life I guess.

I think my dad buys computing magazines. He use to buy amateur photographer at one time but I think its pretty rare now.

If I'm feeling rash I might buy a "motor boat and yachting" but it would be the exception.

The Internet revolution has changed many things.
I buy Glamour magazine despite the fact that I am not glamourous!!
I work in a job where I have to be practical and nail polish and accessories are not ideal.
I like to think of it as my alter ego magazine - nice expensive clothes - heels and pencil skirts and being thin!
As far as girlie magazines go it is not a celebrity-obsessed one with nasty pics of peoples cellulite. I find some of the articles very informative and they regularly cove political and topical issues as well as whats in for Autumn!!
Food magazines just make me hungry and guilty for serving simple food sometimes!! Ooh I am not fasting today.................
