My laptop is very sick
26 Oct 2013, 18:34
My laptop has had a virus embedded, even though I have security. It's one of the ones which asks for money to 'fix' it. I know it's a scam.
Not sure what to do about it, as it's locked everything and I can't even get online to download the proramme that will deal with it.
I have got my tablet, but I do a lot of work on the laptop. Just so cross and annoyed.

OOhhh Penny I agree it's probably a scam, a family friend had the same scam except they paid out cash through PayPal and eventually got this returned, if I remember correctly its a system update thingy going back to a date before your virus struck, I just wish I could help you further but that's all I can remember. Good Luck. :clover: Sue. :clover:

Ugh, how annoying. PC World will sort it out for you but will charge. Might be worth giving them a buzz?

Is it possible to do "system restore" to a previous date, or are you locked out of that, too?

Penny there is a service called Housecall, it is a free thing from Trend Micro who we use for our virus protection, give it a try. Fingers crossed

Edit just read your post again and saw it has locked, will ask my teenage son for advice tomorrow. Hugs in the meantime

A PC expert can probably deal with it for you.Have you one you can trust. A similar thing happened to my husband and our local computer man sorted him out.

My lovely neighbour has sorted it.
A bottle of wine will be winging its next door.

Hi Penny,

So glad you are sorted, nothing worse than feeling useless in front of a piece of machinery which knows things you do not! My husband is not only our resident IT expert but he manages to keep most of our friends and neighbours on line and he is a god send so that bottle of wine has been well earned, in my opinion!

Technology is not my strong suite, it is very frustrating especially as it is not going away any time soon. Love my iPad though and otherwise drive my DH spare

I come to technology kicking and screaming  but it is fabulous just think what we are doing here due to it and clever peeps like @Moogie

Yes amazing :victory:  on another thread I have just introduced @wendyjane from Colorado to the delights of watching Hairy Biker Dave Myers on Strictly come dancing - talk about the sublime and the ridiculous!
