Need some gardener's advice
07 May 2014, 09:38
Let's be honest here, I don't have what we, French, call "la main verte" (the green hand), when I have a plant, it always dies after a few days. Right now I have a lavender pot and an orchid and I don't know what the heck to do with them. The lavender always seems too dry but if I give it twice the water I usually gives it, it doesn't look fine at all. The orchid, I seem to deal with it for now but what to do with it when it'll eventually die. Some say to cut its top but after that what ?

If someone has a clue on how to deal with those poor things, I am all ears :like:

We only have "green fingers" in the UK, a whole "green hand" would be amazing
The Lavender prefers to be on the dry side and the Orchid needs to be somewhere well away from me as I cannot make them flourish.

I'm no expert but I just keep watereing the orchids very occasionally. I cut back the flowering stem once all the flowers have finished. They then slowly produce new leaves and every so often a new stem of flowers. Mine are on a coolish windowsill. I don't feed mine. I sometimes mist the aerial roots. Most indoor plants that survive with me have to manage without much attention.

I have an orchid, amazingly it's on it's second flowering. For me this is somewhat of a miracle as I have the fingers of death when it comes to plants. I leave it to its own devices. Water it once every 2 weeks, when it died I left it alone and it took care of itself. My brother, who has very green fingers, gave it to me, knowing my plant history telling me I couldn't kill it. I hate it when he's right!

I kill orchids very successfully but my mother tells me you have to use rain water to water them hers is still alive- mine is compost!
