I toyed with how to mention sex and Brits so I went with sexy but I stand to be corrected, @Ballerina how would you describe what I was thinking of and then in came the knickers. I rest my case
For me British people are elegant but a little bit old fashion. I imagine families like in the show "Keeping up Appearances". I LOVE British humor and that includes "Mr. Bean" ;)
Well, I can only say that the Brits on this forum don't really represent what I have seen as the stereotypical portrayal of the Brits in American TV, movies, news, media or whatever. Going by what I thought before "meeting" people here the Brittish are made out to be more formal, stiff and maybe pretencious (sp?) is the word I am looking for?? Not sure. But, I think this group is not any of that. Y'all seem pretty normal and laid back. Kinda like Americans who just talk funny. ;) :p
This is interesting. It's not often we get to see how others see us    ! I do agree that the 'image' of the British doesn,t really match the reality!   The formality, stiffness and pretentiousness belongs to another age, possibly 50 years or more ago - definitely pre 60s. I think what you see on this forum is from people who grew up in the sixties and seventies - a time of even greater change in Britain than in the States ... And it,s a lot differemt fro how we,re portrayed, especially in American media and Hollywood films!

But we're still silly!
And no have not been at the bottle (like @izzy!!!) just can't spell on the ipad properly at this time of night!!!
Basically then were a load of loud, pretentious Hyacinth Buckets with vpl and bad teeth who like to talk about sex a lot !!!

Hahaha........yep that's us, 'cept I have really good teeth! :)
@rawkaren, I just thought of something else. The British have a reputation for being meat and potatoes (and fish and chips) eaters. We don't visit England for the cuisine, that's for sure.

So subconsciously, since I've been on this forum, I've been thinking "Wait, red lentils, quinoa, delicious vegetables growing in their gardens, what's going on? Don't the British just grow flowers and eat roasts?"

Clearly this stereotype must have been rendered false, perhaps also in the 60s and 70s, along with the stuffiness and pretentiousness. Though I do have to say that when my kids were in Scotland with their choir about a decade ago, they had some shepherd's pie that was so nasty they are still talking about it. And also a meal at one church that was excellent. Which just goes to show that you can't really generalize about an entire nation.
... And food / local produce / meals out has altered considerably over the last 30 years. Although to be fair in this country we've liked curries and baltis for a long time, as well as chinese and italian food. It just wasn't as widely available until the seventies. My parents took us to restaurants in the sixties, because my father had been to Italy just after the war, and seen children taken to restaurants and involved in eating out - and decided that any children of his would go to restaurants...

And I can remember it being frowned upon at that time, as some restaurants were quite stuffy, and didn't like children (Or the customers didn't)i think that's why we were probably taken more to chinese, indian and later on italian places ...

But I can also remember us kids being made very welcome in restaurants in the States in the early sixties - drugstores, diners - and I think my parents found this quite refreshing.
Can I get the conversation back to knickers? Two tales of men and knickers.
I have been told that some men wear knickers because they find them more comfortable and sexy.
Secondly to corroborate this, my sister, back when she was a road traffic investigator (traffic cop), was called into the mortuary after a big, hairy, tattoo's, Hells Angel biker was taken in after wrapping his bike around a tree. The bloods showed he was high on drugs and drunk as a skunk. He was also wearing ladies red satin knickers and a bra. It was NOT for a stunt.
Julie - there's absolutely no answer to that one ! Wonder if he was buried in 'em ...
As I'm not speaking to my sister any more, I can't ask. Plus besmirching the memory of a Hells Angel by asking if he was buried in ladies knickers is not something conducive to a long and healthy life. I do know LOTS of bikers who wore ladies tights under their leathers as they were easier to wear than thermals and cheaper for winter riding.
Fascinated that you've known lots of Hell's Angels, @Julieathome. Do tell us more!
