Tasmania

Hi everyone
I'm thinking of holidaying in Tassie over the xmas, new year period (I currently live in South Australia). However, I don't know too much about it, apart from watching the Gourmet Farmer programs.
So, can anyone recommend places to stay, visit etc.
I'm really looking for a getting away from everyone holiday, so ideally would like to rent a cottage or cabin somewhere that I can buy nice local food and just spend the time chilling out, checking out the area, and walking.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi there,
@barlemow1, what a fine choice!
Good food and wine-I recommend being in Hobart for the food and wine festival which ties in with the arrival of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race boats down at the harbour. http://www.thetasteoftasmania.com.au/

You must go here for coffee and cake http://sweetenvy.com/Sweet_Envy/Sweet_E ... weets.html

Great vineyards in the area at Coal Valley http://winetasmania.com.au/wine_trails/ ... wine_trail Many of them have really nice restaurants too. Nearby is Richmond, very nice historic town with cheese place.
Fabulous fresh seafood at Mures on the wharf. Flippers on the wharf for fantastic fish and chips!
Mt Field National Park, possible for platypus, we've seen them a few times. http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/abou ... ional-park

There are three good places for a get away from it all, just depends what you want.
Bruny Island- lovely walks, lighthouse. Wineries, Bruny Island cheese and sourdough.

Freycinet-national park, Wineglass Bay, great walks on the coast. http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/abou ... eglass-bay
Cradle Mountain-cabins. Heaps of wildlife and walks. Dove Lake etc. http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/abou ... ional-park

If you don't want to drive around too much. There are lots of cute places to stay around Hobart.
