Glasgow in the winter?
22 Jan 2013, 17:54
Hubby has to travel to Glasgow for a 1 day meeting. What's Glasgow like in winter? The meeting is February 6.

I'm almost tempted to accompany him, but it's an expensive flight for such a short trip and our son is in school.

You can never tell in Scotland - the weather can change by the hour.
I would hope that our current cold snap will have eased by then. The temperature is likely to be low single figures degrees C - could be bright, could be raining, could be snowing

You will have to ask Selmoon, she lives there!

I live in Edinburgh over to the East and it's lovely here in winter.

I think Scotland looks fab any time of year :) Glasgow has a very historic and cultural centre if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Weather-wise, have just had sleet here and very little snow lying (much to my son's annoyance - no good for sledging). Though other parts of Scotland have had quite a bit of snow.

You never can tell!

Ah, sounds exactly like what we have then, minus the history, of course. Something here is terribly old if it's 17th century.

Thanks!

Hi Tracieknits

Glasgow is a great city with loads of history and culture. Plenty to see and do, however it would be too much for only one day, and for the expense!

It is in a great location for popping up to the Highlands in a couple of hours or for Island hopping to the West. Unlike Auld Reekie, I mean Edinburgh (oops just slipped out there Jo  .....lol) it doesn't have a castle.

If you were staying for a couple of days then it would definitely be a very cultural trip.

Temperature wise, for example, the next five day forecast ranges from -2C to 8C. They do say you can have 4 seasons in the one day!

Hope that helps Tracie.

PS I am sure you could also find some lovely Scottish wool too on your visit.... :P

Oh that does sound like fun. But yes, it looks like hubby will arrive, have two days of meetings and then leave early the next morning. And tickets are $1400 per person at the cheapest (which means not flying with hubby), so I think I'm taking a pass this time.

I'll be sure and tell him to pack one of everything with that forecast! LOL That's nuts :-) And I'll see if I can get him to interrupt his scotch shopping to buy some wool for me. If he finds where Balvenie Doublewood is made, I hope we're able to get him out of there.

Balvenie is made in Dufftown in Aberdeenshire. However, I am sure the "Whisky Shop" in the Buchanan Galleries Buchanan Street, Glasgow will have some. (One of the main shopping areas in the centre of town)Infact it has hundreds of malt whiskies. (Another of my downfalls, that and squishy wool!) There is also a fantastic pub that has lots of whiskies on display and of course you can buy a dram or two, it is called the "Pot Still" Oh, and if he want to go to a famous bar that has the longest bar in Europe and sells fantastic Scottish Ale, "The Horseshoe Bar" is the one, near Central Station.........
Yup, a couple of jumpers to go over his shirts and he'll be fine. He might need a pair of gloves and scarf too ;-).

Hope that helps Tracie.

I'm from Glasgow. It will probably be raining and/or windy. Take warm and waterproof clothes, wellies, a brolly ect, just to be safe :)

When you get to the center make sure you look up at all the buildings, the architecture is really beautiful. The west end is the nice posh bit, good for walking around and has some nice shops and Kelvin Grove park is nice to walk round and has the museum and art gallery and there's also the botanical gardens. You can get the subway from the center to the west end, get off at Hillhead.

There's loads of galleries and different museums and stuff all over the city to visit, and lots of lovely parks and old buildings, you'll like it.

I spent most of my years in Glasgow and surrounding areas. In my late teenage/early twenties I lived in the West End and I have such fond memories...I could tell you a story or two!!! The city centre doesn't suffer from the extremes of weather especially when there is the underground to get about on. If you ever do get the opportunity to go there I would highly recommend it..........far better than Edinburgh    For the past 9 years I have lived in the Scottish Highlands - wow, that is a different WOL - fabulous!!

Thanks so much for all of your responses - I'll make sure he sees them tonight.

So he actually ended up flying into and out of Edinburgh because it's cheaper. he's going back again in another week. The meetings are taking place in a small town midway between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

He was snowed in for the February trip, because Newark NJ had a big blizzard, so he got to spend two days wandering around Edinburgh. He visited Edinburgh Castle, a "Scotch Whiskey Experience" and Princes Street, among other places -- and several pubs. He enjoyed the food, but felt a bit guilty as he said it didn't seem like he was often making the wisest choices. He did enjoy the deep fried haggis in gravy, for example ;-) and the pubs on Rose St.

He tasted a number of bottles and brought home an Abelour double cask. It's a brand we can't find where we are, so that was fun for him. He learned quite a bit about whiskey and is hoping to acquire a taste for the peatier whiskies. So far he likes the sweet double barreled stuff best though.

So he flies out again on Monday, March 5.
