Home is where the food is...
01 Apr 2013, 20:54
After a trip to two supermarkets (got a load of veggies and no sweet stuff) my friend Christina and I made a lethal stop to a new British delicatessen.
The ONLY British delicatessen here in Athens.
I died and went to heaven. There was Irn Bru and tea cakes and Cadbury and Cheddar and crisps and pork scratchings and ale and soups and custard and, and, and...
I managed to not get everything but I did get some things and my tea tonight was:
Heinz beef stew with dumplings.
500ml tin of Scrumpy Jack cider.
A packet of Mcvitties mini cheddars (Branston pickle flavour).
A tea cake.
A Galaxy egg (the small one).
A shortbread biscuit.
This was not just comfort food, this was love food. I felt so good when I ate them, it's like my heart moved and went to Britain!!!
Bless! I'm away from blighty at the moment and you almost make me wish I was back there...
Aaaaaahhhhh there are times that I miss it terribly. I think of London and cry... :-(
BTW, calorie count for dinner, 986. OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It all sounds so good, TML!!!

Fasting today, and food sounds so good right now. OMG...
Ooooops! Sorry about that!
I'm away from Scotland and miss it terribly. Comfort/love food really helps. I can get Irn Bru fairly regularly, but diet Irn Bru, which is my tipple of choice , is reclusive. I practically dance in the supermarket aisle when I find it. Strangely enough, the filling stations in the middle of nowhere regularly have Tunnock's caramel wafers and logs! Found tablet in a wee cafe the other day , but it was very disappointing, so much so I didn't eat it. Tattie scones get made at home, oatcakes also as supplies are hit and miss. Haggis needs to get smuggled in, as does Stornoway marag dhu.
Still want to go home though!
Your story reminded me of when I lived in Rssex when my children were little - my neighbour was an old man who had been exiled from Scotland
for many years, his wife was disabled and he was her carer. Every time I went home he would give me a list of food to bring back - square sauage, bridies, scotch pies and his absolute favourite, cream cookies!. Anyone remember them?(This was over thirty years ago!) The only thing that didn't survive the train journey was the Irn Bru, well three small kids and a long train journey.. Every time I bumped into him he would advise me to "gang hame hen and see yer mammy!" ulterior motives?
I live in France.......
Proper biscuits, currant buns, plenty of veggie meals in restaurants, fruit and veg all year long, cheddar, being able to have a pastry or bun when I go out for coffee, ice cream readily available when out in summer, marmite, marmalade, pound shops, Hobbycraft, pets at home................best stop before I pack up my chickens, ducks, cats, dog and rabbit and move back to blighty!
If I were away from home , I would miss Ivor Dewney pasty I only have one about once a month but straight from the oven they are great
I missed British food while I lived in the USA and would stock up every time I came home for a visit. I did find Brit food shops but they were very expensive. Now I am home I find I miss certain things about the USA :)
TML13, just the mention of mini cheddars and I'm salivating. I always have a bag on the plane when I go back to the UK and don't even mention cheese and onion crisps!
Aaaaawwwww you guys, aren't we all filled with nostalgia?
Cream cookies... yeas I remember them. There are similar in Greece and my mum used to buy them and I used to say "but they aren't the same, can't you see?" and I couldn't even say the S yet so I thpoke like a thpanith.

Next time I go to the deli I'll get Irn Bru with vodka, some crisps, a tin of soup and hhhmmmm I don't know what else.
I canny wait to see me dad's face when I give him the Spam and liquorice I got him. :-)
OK, WHO mentioned Tunnocks Caramel Waifers? C'mon, own up! I will now have to have one, or three. Not much Scottish food I miss but TCW's hit the spot every time, a packet of them can go down faster than the Titanic, mmmm.

Ballerina x
ah, don't worry, the Titanic didn't go down that fast...
