Perhaps the OP has two logins, only case I can think of.

Yes grannyl it's normal, If you hold your mouse over the thumb without clicking, it will tell you what it does. When thumb is up you can say 'thanks' when thumb is down, then you have already thanked and have option to remove your previous 'thanks'.
