As some of you know, we are expats and are currently back in the UK. We come back every summer and spend half the time in Lincolnshire with my mum and half the time in my hometown, Manchester.

For the past ten years, we have stayed in a flat owned by the same landlord that my husband and I used to rent from back in our uni days. Anyway to get to the point, we are supposed to be moving in on the 20th of July ( staying till the 20th of August) and he rang me a couple of days ago to say his flat has been repossessed and we have nowhere to stay when we are planning to be in Manchester!!!

I am currently scouring gumtree, local papers and anywhere else I can think of that could get us temporary accommodation for those dates. We can't afford and don't want to stay in a hotel.

So, any suggestions or does anyone know of or have an empty flat we could rent on those dates?

Try airbnb? Phone up some of the local letting agents and see if they have any voids?

I'd put an ad on Gumtree, too. The other thing you can do is try some of the house exchange sites as they sometimes allow one-sided lets or more complicated swaps.

Thank you. I never thought of putting an ad on myself! Will do that shortly. I have tried the house exchange sites with no luck so far but will keep on looking

Not sure whether you actually have to stay in Manchester itself or whether somewhere nearby would be alright but we always use Cottages 4u when we are in the UK - might be worth a try in case they have something in the vicinity. Good luck.

(I was just going to suggest the university, apparently many of them let accommodation at reasonable rates in holiday times...)

Thanks Golarne that is what we did. We have friends who work there and they pointed us in the right direction
