I echo the comments about Orkney. It is a fascinating place with incredible historical sites. That's the place for you @Tracieknits if you want to see standing stones, but there's also lots more, includinng a couple or attractive small towns and you can't go beyong a couple of miles without coming across one site or another. Another good place for Scottish archaeology is the area around Kilmartin. Lewis also has some amazing sites, but I don't consider the island itself to be very attractive, although there are beautiful coral beaches.

There really is so much to see that I think it is worth considering what really interests you;. culture, landscape, archaeology, more recent history, architecture, urban buzz, rural beauty.... The list is endless. Personally, I'd avoid the tourist hotspots, but that's a persoal prejudice :wink:
