I am a 1:1 special needs assistant in a primary school. I have worked with one child since he started in Reception, he is now in yr5 and it is wonderful to see how he has matured and grown. Now working on his independence so he will be ok to go to High School. Just about to start a Nurture Group when we go back to school after half term. I'm also married to a teacher, my mother in law and brother in law were teachers so I was surrounded by them.

Sad that teaching is not the wonderful, exciting adventure that it once was.

Very interesting. I have done the odd worn egg count or two. Mainly on dogs though, when covering the microbiology dept. Such a great job NOT. Preferred playing with blood, and other bodily fluids to be honest,

Hello,

I just saw this tent in the new "campsite!" I used to be a software developer and 8 years ago, I quit my job to go back to school and do an internship to become a teacher. I taught 4th grade for one year and then I got my dream job to teach Computer Literacy. I teach grades K-8. But, of course, I make way less money than I used to, so I've had to take on a 2nd job. I now also teach Intro to Computers at a Community College on Saturdays!

Fasting is super easy when I'm at school. I almost always have student in the room with me and when I'm teaching I forget all about eating! At my school we don't have any food vending machines and the food the kids eat is not at all appealing to me. So, that makes it easy too! I can only eat what I bring with me!

On Saturdays, after class I treat myself to a nice lunch with a friend. I usually splurge, but then often I don't really need dinner.

The only problem I really have is trying to get exercise in. I'm on my feet all day, so that's good, but I work at school a few hours after the school day ends, so there just isn't much time for proper exercise. But, I'm working on it. When it starts getting lighter/warmer here (Northeast U.S.) then I should be able to do better!

I'm looking forward to getting to know fellow 5:2 teachers!

There are several teachers here aren't there. Current and retired. I will put myself into the support staff end of the tent or maybe the awning!
I did teach veterinary students how to do out of hours lab work, so maybe I could perch on the steps.

I've been looking for this tent! @carrieoates nooo don't stand in the awning, I need someone to be in there with me that knows how mental a science department can be :) especially as I think my techs are getting sick of me asking for silly things

Hey Danielle, we are here to help. I was doing food tests, basically all my old, stale food out of my kitchen pre shop delivery, plus an egg from one of my chooks. Are you aqa, IGCSE or still 21st century? I tech for yrs 9, 10, 11 plus some IB classes too. Blueberrys for DNA extraction are flavour of the month for our yr 8th the moment.

Hi
Mind if I join this tent? I've been teaching 23 years, mostly part time until 2007, @ a local community college. I teach adult basic ed (reading, writing, math, computers) through GED. I love teaching, love my students & am so glad I fell backwards into this field so long ago. (My first degree was in Dietetics). Lots of changes in the states with the new GED this year, so I'm really happy to have the 5:2 forum to take my mind off some of the craziness.
Fasting on M/Th is easy at work, I'm just too busy to think about it. It will be nice to camp here with those of like calling. :)

I went to school once, and I have my own glass for some of that wine, is that sufficient to gain access?

OMG one lecture to 100 5th graders today and I am broken. (Up late and up again early preparing, for starters) How do you guys do this all day 5 days a week?!

MaryAnn - you get used to it after a while! But, it is exhausting! I teach K-8 Computers during the week and that's tiring enough, but to make extra money I teach a college course on Saturday mornings! I'm basically constantly tired!

Well, its official! I finally met my 20th student today and he is lovely and fit in straight away. I have a beautiful preschool class ( with a few challenges) but in general it should be a great year. This is the first time in years this has happened to me. Usually I have 2 or 3 extremely challenging children so I am so happy!!!

Last night I was babysitting for my grandsons so my son and DIL could both attend parents' evening for James aged 5. He's only been in school since September and is making great progress but as a retired teacher myself I was amazed at the sheer volume of information already recorded about him. They came home with a file of his 'work', observations (with photos!), umpteen assessments, targets etc etc. I'm so glad to be out of teaching now. I do realise that educators must be accountable and provide evidence of their competence but the record taking and constant assessments from such a young age seem excessive to me.
