I'm with wind singer 123 on this one. Whilst I sort of enjoyed the book I just didn't warm to Aaron at all and felt that I was reading about a character about 20 years older than he was supposed to be. Quite enjoyed the ending and suppose it shows that with a lot of grief it takes up less of your energy as time goes by.

Did I miss the November book choice/decision?
I've been trying to find it too..and as on of the Gang of Three I should know... :?:
Ha, pay attention in class :geek: ...... silverdarling did mention that she was musing over the idea in one of her threads because of the voting results, but I got the impression she had not closed it off yet. I guess she needs to consult with you guys before the decision is final.....
Yes, I remember that because the October poll was such a close one that Silverdarling was thinking about having the new (for grownups) J.K. Rowling book for November - Gawd, can't remember the name - I really must pay more attention! :frown: Anyway, secretly hoping we'll have another poll because I don't fancy that one - can't stand Harry Potter :curse: I could never understand all the adults who read all the books, my sister being one of them, (and my grown up son!) My sister used to hide them from her little boy so she could read them first!! I can't stand the films either ...
Ah well as you have influence maybe I can ask for another vote as I have read it. I can't compare it to any HP books as I never read any of them and I have never seen any of the films through to the end either. I won't tell you what I thought of the grown ups book though it in case it gets voted in
I know what wind singer means about not warming to the characters, but I quite enjoy the more objective look at her characters. It is probably an acquired taste . I haven 'read all of her books-but those I have are all a little odd in their plots. She is actually one of the few fiction writers I will pay full price for!

Honestly the moment I leave the classrooooommm!!!!   :geek: :geek:
It's The Cuckoo's Calling and it got one less vote than the Anne Tyler - so as 7 people voted for it, I thought it might be a good idea to have it for November ... But it could go up for a vote again ...

(PS I didn't really like HP either     ) but I would put CC in again this time as it did get a lot of votes last time ... But it could then go up against any other titles people want to nominate!

Can I leave you to organise another poll dear @dhana hmmmm? As I am away at the Wigtown Book Festival this weekend ... (Watch out for some updates (that's if the wifi is any good  ) http://www.wigtownbookfestival.com

Wonder if they have any real tablet in Wigtown
We're looking for suggestions for November's book so if you have any thoughts about a particular author or book let's hear them!! :geek:
Actually I have one myself, any book by Chimananda Ngozi Adichie - she is one of the most gifted young writers of recent times - her writing is incredibly vivid and moving. her latest book Americanah is a "superb dissection of race in the UK and USA, an incredibly readable and rich tapestry of Nigerian and American life".
Her earlier books are Purple Hibuscus (stunning) and Half a Yellow Sun (which I haven't read yet).
Thinking caps on please, and let's hear your suggestions :?: I'm under strict instructions from the head of the Gang of Three to get this up and running so all book nominations welcome!! :geek: :geek:
I did enjoy this book. The situation of losing a loved one is so fraught, and I thought she dealt with it so carefully, as the people around Aaron tried to deal with him. The POV of Aaron helped - a person trying to survive, mostly succeeding, yet parts of life just going by him, seemingly unseen. The toughest part of the book was when he realized his marriage wasn't happy - what would have happened had she not died? I guess I never questioned how the characters got together, it just seemed to be one of those matches that happen and I accepted it as such. Re: his acting older than he was - well yes, I agree. But I thought the bereavement and his handicap might have aged him - though he was certainly prickly about accepting ANY help! Childish behavior, there. Don't want to say too much more, happy endings are good by me! Thanks for the choice.

BTW - I LOVE Harry Potter and wouldn't mind reading Cuckoo's Calling  !
Please may I nominate Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn? I have downloaded it but not got around to it yet and all the reviews I have read seem positive.
just read some of the reviews and it does sound really good, not the genre that I usually read being more of a crime, mystery, touch of suspense/horror? pending the boss's approval I think it would be a good one to put on the shortlist. :?: Silverdarling :?:
Hellooooo! Yep put it down :victory: :like:
AAha..there she is ..my gallivanting boss lady - hope you had a good weekend where was it this time? I keep losing track..Wigan, book festival.?
Hahaaa! WIGTOWN! Wigan indeed    can recommend. 18 bookshops in a town of about 1000 people. 10 day book festival every October. Actually sat outside for lunch on Saturday ...
A glimpse of Wigtown - this was the artist in residence's work and very amusing it was too
