Birds nesting........lawn??
16 May 2014, 08:18
Hi

Goldfinches (I think) have suddenly decided to make a bird box in my front garden their home.

I can't stop moving around. Is there a good bad time for the day for mowing the lawn?

Any birdie people out there to advise?

Where is the bird box attached? Is it ina tree in the middle of the lawn? If so they will probably just get used to you.

I don't know, I had to advise someone today about removing a Zebra Finch nest from their fly screen in their offices!!

Our House Martins are back! They make a dreadful mess but it is worth it.

A Zebra Finch? I'm guessing thats a stripy bird. Ooh you're so lucky over there for birds. They are so beautiful aren't they. Mind you, every year we have a nest of starlings. They are crazy little characters...but what a beautiful song they sing!

Sort of.

I heve a well (repro) in a corner near the house. There is a bird box in the apex of the roof.

It is quite near the house.

I really don't know precisely.

I certainly feel quiet protective now he (she?) is here, despite my ignorance.

Just interested in if early/ late/ evening is going to make any odds, that mower is quite noisy.

I was out having a cup of tea a few days ago and a birdie seems to be getting abit agitated in the lilac at the bottom. It seemed to be him so I wondered if my presence was upsetting him and preventing him from getting to the box, so I moved away.

They'll get used to you, quite often a machine, however noisy is less intimidating than a person. The female will sit tight on the eggs and the bloke will get over it. Do you remember the wagtail nesting in a tractor engine and they came and went while the young were growing up?!
I'm sure they'll be fine.

Our nesting bird in a small tree in the lawn got used to us and the mower-but didn't survive the neighbours cat!

I was going to say that but people know my thoughts on marauding cats!
