Felt embarrassed
13 Nov 2013, 04:03
Today at Safeway, I ask the produce person if he had any brussel sprouts, while his answer was good and polite, he just kept on straight doing his work, didn't even acknowledge I was there, only this question in the air that he answered.

I am not wanting a standing ovation because I asked something, even a half sideward glance would have been sufficient.

I got out of there very quickly.

I commend people working in public service, but I can tell sometimes that its all a bit mundane for them.

Not a real fan either. I hate how they are bullying farmers to sell their produce for peanuts so the safeway giants can make a killing financially.
We have Aldi across the roundabout and am sure they are denting safe ways profit a bit.

How rude, he is the one that should be embarrassed. However you did ask for brussel sprouts, just saying

What's wrong with brussels sprouts??????

I need to sign off here and get ready for bed. I'm getting much too silly.

Brussel sprouts are one of me least favourite veg, but they tasted nice, did I say nice? when out for dinner, no butter, but not over cooked, like happens with me, just steamed lightly and they were good.

I looked at safeway produce person and said, would you have brussel sprouts today? Forgot to say hi or hello, but I was certainly not unpleasant.

I assume people look in the direction of people talking with each other.

He might have been shy, could have had a supervisor on his back all morning about chatting to customers or he might have just found out he needed surgery. I think empathy works best when it works both ways.

I'm the reverse, I hate when shop staff act friendly and try to engage me in conversation. If they dare to make eye contact I see it as a challenge and gore them to death with my mighty antlers. But we're all different.

My pet hate in supermarkets, or anywhere where you are being served, is being called darling or sweetheart, OH says it back to them as in "thankyou daaaarling".

I am a pretty friendly person and I will chat with anyone, but I do hate it when assistants ask you too many questions. Like, what are your plans for today? Because I know they've been told to ask this, and to be honest, my life is pretty boring, so I'm pretty sure they glaze over as soon as I say anything.

Was he young? I've noticed similar behaviour in our local Sainsbury's. Quite a few of the young people, in particular, have a cerain 'look' - rounded shoulders, looking down, oblivious to anything around them. In fact my oldest daughter looks like that. Why? They have a phone permanently stuck to their hands and the worst culprits (like my daughter) have ear phones in! I do find it easier to text my daughter than to talk to her these days. Perhaps the next time you should look out for the body language of the person and then text your question, then just wait a second for the vibration in his pocket  . I'm sure he will be thrilled that you communicated in this manner    .

Our Safeway in the UK was sold to the highest bidder Morrisons, it was such a friendly store and I still miss it. That said, the people working in the supermarkets here in Cornwall are all very pleasant, I'm very chatty when I shop and always have a laugh or put the world to rights with the cashiers. The highlight of my day! I used to hate food shopping when I lived in Brighton.

Hub is often addressed in Tesco as 'mate'. His standard reply, 'oh, how long have we been friends?'. They usually then wear a most puzzled expression!!

I actually dislike it when the checkout staff comment on my purchases!

'What are you going to do with all those onions/chillies/carrots?'.

Well after my brussel sprouts comments I went and bought some. This is going to be my last attempt to like them.

I have relatives who work in big supermarkets and the staffing levels just keep on getting reduced to appalling levels, the moral is low and it's a hard gig. The people at the coal face get a very rotten deal
