Re: fitbit flex - yes or no?

Dhana, don't want to lead you into spendthrift ways, but honestly, having a Fitbit One has made such a difference to my activity levels. Combined with the influence NEAT has had on my life, I'm SO much more aware of how much (or little) I move. I do things like pace when I'm on the phone now and then squint into my bra (serious contortions involved, particularly if I'm not wearing my reading glasses) to see how many steps that call was. Lucky no one can see me at home or I'd surely be locked away in the Big House of Strange Behaviour.

Umleila, I'd join the forum Fitbit users group, but I had a look the other day and realised I'd be at the bottom of the league table (how do you all manage to walk that many steps in a day?!). This would lead to serious sulking and pouting (cute when one's 5, not so much at 55), so perhaps I'd better wait till I've improved my activity levels a bit!

Yes, there would always be someone on the top and bottom of the list. it wouldn't always be the same people though and honestly I find it encouraging to see other people's stats.

Mainly though I set my own personal goals and am happy if I reach them.

And who says pouting at 55 isn't cute!

mummybunny, just a quick word of caution about the iphone - if you aren't planning to get the newest then check whether it will sync with fitbit. My ipad mini does, but my (cheap) Android phone doesn't.

BTW 12,346 steps and 1990 calories today

That's great SianS. I only usually get past ten thousand towards the end of the day. Have you done anything unusual today?

I'm currently trying to persuade my daughter to come to the park for a walk with me. No luck so far!

Umleila, I went for a run this morning, that's what has got my stats up

Having said that, now I have synced it, it is showing 45mins intense activity from 10.40 onwards, and I know I wasn't THAT active then :-? weird

Ha. Yeah, been there done that. I usually try to wait for an obscure area before taking a peek inside my bra. LOL. Usually. But, I will admit to having a look while outside walking. Thankfully, our neighbors are few and far between. There are more cornfields, cows, horses and llamas than people; so I think I'm ok. Haven't noticed any strange looks aside from the cows. When they stare me down, I MOO at them and then they look at me like I've lost my marbles. Yeah, they're probably right.

I need to dress smart for work and I didn't want a bracelet clashing with my wardrobe. I've also read some reviews that the Flex, which is newer than the One, is not as good as the One.

That said, I wish the One had some kind of nicer wristband options, and the ability to wear it all the time on your wrist if you want to (the wristband is only meant to be worn when you're sleeping and not during other activity). On weekends I'd find it a lot easier to wear it on my wrist.

Am interested in this despite having heard nothing about it before. Sounds intriguing, a bit magic! One question however: how do you go on when driving or on public transport? Does it record the vibrations as steps? (If so that could be a good reason for a pleasant drive to the coast for the day!)

Yeah, I too hope that our fitbit group will get bigger  I love my fitbit One. I don't track my sleep but I do like the stairs tracking. For years I've been avoiding elevators as much as possible...at work people who walk with me already know they need to take the stairs, so it turns that I climb 25-30 stair flights a day in addition to my other activities. I too have become addicted to my fitbit and I don't take a step without it. Since I have it I have increased my physical activity and I enjoy it much more than before :victory:

Ginge
It does record some steps while driving and it depends on what you are driving. If you are riding a small car with bad suspension on bad roads it might become significant, but if it is a reasonable car it will be negligible. For example a 4 hour drive recorded less than 100 steps for me. My usual daily drive to work and Back home which is about 30 miles in total records less than 50 steps.

A riding lawn mower is a big culprit for causing unearned steps. But remember, you are only cheating yoursel. Love my FITBIT!

Some roller coasters will get you false steps and stair climbs, too. At Busch Gardens last year I almost lost my Ultra on a coaster that goes upside down 4 or 5 times. It ended up inside my shirt but no longer hooked on my bra!

I read on another forum that cruise ships can get you lots of fake readings for stairs climbed because of the wind, the waves, the altitude, maybe bumps? IDK, but I will find out in October.

That's fighting Talk that is

SianS how often do you go running and what kind of distance do you do?

I'm having difficulty moving today. I'm hoping I get more active later.

Umleila, since being in this forum I was encouraged to try for 5km and now aim to do at least that distance 3 or 4 times a week. I signed up for something called parkrun which is a free timed measured 5k run every saturday at 9.00.

Ginge, it is possible to log activities on the fitbit website which will override the measured activity. For example if you have been more active than the fitbit thinks, like using a cross trainer or exercise bike you can add those calories in either manually or from a list of activities, likewise if you have spent all day driving or on public transport you can log that too.
