I too just finally settled down for the day after cooking all day ...AND FASTING...pretty dang proud of myself. Bumped Thursday fast to today so as not to conflict with Thanksgiving. Made 5 pumpkin pies...3 of them gluten and dairy free. Made a GF carrot cake...and have a non dairy cream cheese alternative frosting to try tomorrow. Also made a dairy free chocolate hazelnut cheesecake. Cooking for all the allergies makes it very challenging. Made sausage/apple stuffing (2 batches...one GF). Tomorrow cooking the sweet potatoes and white gravy then headed to daughters house for the dinner.

Happy Thanksgiving and Hanukka to everyone. Enjoy the festivities and remember there is always next week to get back on track if we over indulge this week, so don't stress too much.

Green bean casserole has cream of mushroom soup and these crispy breaded fried onions that come in a can. It is a somewhat newer American tradition, I think. http://www.campbellskitchen.com/recipes ... role-24099

Thanks for that 43tweaker. I've never seen that before. Is it a traditional thanksgiving dish like the turkey and pumpkin pie? Sounds like a veritable feast. Enjoy

I'm going to the turkey trot tomorrow morning! We have a walking contingent and a running contingent. I'll be in the former, and the 5K will probably take us a good hour. LOL. The running contingent includes one daughter and her girlfriend, and they will probably take, oh, I don't know, 10 minutes. Slight exaggeration, I think.

Dinner is turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes simply baked, green beans simply steamed (the green bean casserole is indeed traditional, but not at our house, where we all prefer to eat lower fat). Butternut squash rolls - that's a new one. Oh, and olives. Yuck. I'll eat everything but.

Daughter and SIL made the pies today and they are sitting on the counter staring at me - pumpkin, apple cranberry with lattice crust, and pecan. WOW.

Happy day, one and all!!

MaryAnn wrote: Hey, 43tweaker, can I get your recipe for no-bake cookies?

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/cook ... index.html

This recipe is very similar to mine except mine calls for 3 tablespoons cocoa powder and 1/2 c peanut butter. I think the main trick is that it has to boil a while to set up right and every stove is a little different amount of time. (It is more like 3 minutes of a rolling boil on my stove)If you have ever made fudge or candy, you will know what it means...the soft ball stage. Otherwise, you will have a gooey mess and be eating them with a spoon. :)

Many thanks 43tweaker for sharing your delicious recipes. My family love American foods and sometimes buy them from the American sweetshop in our local town (which is rather expensive)
I will certainly give your cookie recipe a try.
Have a super Thanksgiving Day.

Turkey trot: Daughter came in 4th place in the 20 - 29 year old females. Thought I'd do a bit of bragging.

And the walking contingent did it in a mere 55 minutes. We came in ahead of one 80 year old man. Yeah, I know, pretty impressive. You can all cheer now.

Oh, and dinner was great!

"Turkey trot" love the name wendyjane! In the olden days was that when people were chasing the turkey to catch for dinner?? Well done to your daughter. Great result! Glad the dinner went well. Sounds like a lovely family day.

@Denwoman, there are turkey trots all over the US. It's probably a fairly new addition to the Thanksgiving traditions, but you'd have to ask some runners when they started. My runner daughter roped most of the family into our local one (which is a fundraiser for the food bank) two years ago, and the rest, as they say, is history

(edit)I got curious and looked on Wikipedia.
...the Troy Turkey Trot began in 1916 with six runners and has grown into one of the largest and oldest turkey trots in the U.S....
So the races have been around almost a century longer than I thought!

and...
Turkey trots are also held in the United Kingdom, usually shortly before or after Christmas Day.
