My bestie has BRCA2
30 Apr 2014, 05:26
Hello everyone,

Just wondering does anyone have any experience if having or knowing someone who has BRCA2? My darling best friend, after fighting a huge year-long battle with breast cancer, has just be diagnosed with this horrible gene, and I'm far away atm and can't support her as I'd like. She now needs an oophorectomy, and her other (large) boob off, as well as a reconstruction. Just posting in the hope of some support from women with a similar lived experience, before I hit dr google to read about the facts.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your friend Jools, unfortunately I can't help even though a lot of family and friends have suffered from various forms of breast cancer, with varying results, I am not aware of any being diagnosed with this gene. My best wishes to her for a successful outcome.

Sorry Jools,No advice to give..just hoping someone here can offer you some useful info.
Sorry to hear this..it's an anxious worrying time watching from the sidelines as a loved friend goes thru a bad time ..
Sometimes we feel helpless but all we can do is " be there" in any way we can..in your case, trying to arm yourself with knowledge and,as your friend is far away, probably keeping in touch by phone, text, skype etc
All the wonders of the techno age we live in,but remember too how welcome a snail mail might be to your friend x
Hoping for a good outcome for her x

SOsorry to hear that @jools7. The only experience I have is with two women at work. Both had double mastectomy, chemo & radiation. One has been clear for over 10 years, the other has had a recurrence, but since they found the BRCA2 & put her on tamoxifen, she has had good results. No recurrences & clear scans, for about 8 years now. Everyone responds differently, sending prayers & hugs that your bestie will have the best & highest outcome. Prayers for you too, its hard to feel helpless.

This is an excellent site and I found a lot of support from the forums while going through treatment for breast cancer. As far as I'm aware I'm not BRCA2 as I don't meet the criteria for testing. Be careful googling as there are some weird/upsetting things out there on breast cancer. Sending your friend my best wishes x

Sorry to hear this, how upsetting.

I don't know much about BRCA2, but there is a good review of BC treatments here: http://www.jcancer.org/v04p0117.htm

I would also point out that intermittent fasting combined with very low carb eating will inhibit mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin - and of course rapamycin and other anti-cancer agents act to inhibit mTOR) and the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway and promotes apoptosis and autophagy, whilst simultaneously starving the cancer cells of glucose (and most/all cancer cells cannot use ketones or fatty acids for fuel) and these two lifestyle changes may help boost the effect of BC treatments.

So sorry @Jools7 This news is dreadful for you and likeeeveryone else I have no advice to offer but hopefully carorees answer offers you something, we all know someone in similar situations I myself seem surrounded by cancer victims family/friends/ex work colleagues/neighbours, some win their battles some keep fighting on and some don't.
Good luck to your friend I'm sure she at least understands your dilemma being so far from her  Hugs to you both
