Tautology!!
22 Nov 2013, 08:52
Here in good ol' Blighty, we're obviously very dim! Dear Aunty Beeb deems we don't understand 'English' any more, so they employ a liberal use of tautology, to make sure we all get the point.
Some recent (and much used) examples include:

Falling down, (will gravity allow you to fall up?)
Hidden out of sight (work that one out!)
Reversing backwards (funny, I always thought you could reverse forwards too! No? oh!)
Razed to the ground (as opposed to raised... doh!)

And we no longer seem to have 'mornings', but 'start to the day' :curse:

Any more examples out there?

Sorry, I have to agree with the last one -- at the "start to the day", you should be celebrating, not morning.

Must say I'm a morning person myself but I do notice that when initials are used, often the full version of the last initial is included for no useful purpose, e.g. HIV virus, BBC corporation OCD disorder etc.Totally tautological as well as illogical.

'Please put your PIN NUMBER in' always gets me!

To go with the PIN number, there's the "ATM machine".

To drive to the ATM machine to use your PIN number, you could use your GPS system.

Oh, and while I'm on a roll...here's a free gift (much better than those gifts you have to pay for) and why do Americans say, tuna fish? Is there a tuna bear? A tuna lizard?

<---- My profile picture here is a cartoona! Somebody stop me!

If you're buying one of those free gifts, I want you to prepay in advance.

I'd better go, I have an appointment at 2.30pm this afternoon.

I always wondered how somebody that's "gone" missing can also "turn up" missing ? :?:

Another hater of PIN nimbler
My other pet hate is PAT test.
Here in the desert with the many nationalities, we regularly are asked to 'revert back' and 'prepone' :o

I've never heard of 'prepone'. Dare I be ignorant and ask what it is?

.................

I'm with you on this one Penny, perhaps it means the opposite to postpone?

I thought it meant to postpone before you've even planned to do something!

No such word in my 'big' dictionary......so I suppose this must mean it is meaningless! :?:
