Well, here in San Francisco its cold and foggy today, but due to warm up and have some sun tomorrow. Next week its supposed to be sunny and in the mid 70'sF. Away from the coast though, its will be very warm. Probably around 90F or so. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (inland) and I love San Francisco. Many wonderful restaurants here, but if you're fasting that might be tough. Good luck!

Enjoy your trip.
That's handy lovemyparrot putting the calorie value on menus, will look for that, thanks.

Betsysgr8 and Scotty that's a good and sensible point about sharing meals, will try and persuade hubby......don't hold out much hope though as he likes his grub!!!!! Like the sound of the Parkers Lighthouse restaurant, will try to find it, thanks.

Yes, we are going to Yosemite, or passing through, it all sounds wonderful, only possible as we're now retired!!!! Many thanks one and all. Xx
Hi, Grannyl - My hubby and I always split a meal in restaurants these days or order smaller appetizer plates. We've often been to Parkers Lighthouse - sit outside by the water if its a nice, sunny day (and yes it seems to be warming up again for next week). You'll love Yosemite too.

Once again, have a great trip and don't even think about fasting!!!!
We live in Monterey, not far from San Francisco. Lots of lovely local restaurants around here. You still have some of the standard chains, but not as dense as you would see in the east. Lots of fresh food, seafood and with berry season hitting full swing now, beautiful seasonal fare. Do take everyone's advise and bring things you can layer. Here we still get into the 40's at night with the mists from the ocean. The day we see upper sixties and the shade can be quite cool. SF is a bit warmer than we are, but you'll still need those layers.
Thank you all for taking the time to respond and for all your good advice. We are getting very excited now and can't wait to leave, you are all very lucky living in such a beautiful place. I've been busy today sorting our clothes out, washing and ironing, acting on your advice to layer. I'm so delighted to be able to get into my summer clothes again, lost 8lbs in just over 3 weeks so am over the moon!

I shall fast tomorrow then hopefully again on Wednesday when we are travelling down to London, after that who knows!!!!!? I will let you know how we get on. Thanks again for the support. Xx
8-) Hi All
It seems ages ago when I was asking for your advice re our holiday in California. We have been home for a week now and have only just come down to earth!!

All your advice was spot on, thanks so much. We had an incredible time, saw and experienced so many amazing things. It all seems such a dream now. :frown:

Now to the 5:2 issues! Well, I had a final push before we left and managed to get a further 2 lbs off which meant I could actually get into some of my Summer clothes again! Still 7lbs to go though.

We had a long journey down to Heathrow so used that as a fast day. It was ok till we went for dinner in the hotel, OH had the buffet whilst I settled for salmon and veg.....oh that buffet looked so good but really didn't bother me so much, even having water not wine!! Wow, this WOE has really changed how I feel about food. To cut a long holiday (story) short, I did really well for about 2 weeks......avoiding (trying to) bread, cutting out breakfasts, sharing huge portions, choosing salads where possible, asking for dressings on the side, asked for 2 eggs scrambled for lunch where possible. Having the calories on a menu was very revealing, as I found myself rejecting dishes I might otherwise have chosen. The salads were brilliant, so crisp, fresh and so many things in them. Just had to watch for addition of too much cheese and salt, but everyone was so friendly and obliging. Didn't manage any proper fasting but was very aware of what I was eating but not in a bad way. Usually on holiday I drop my reserves, where food is concerned, and eat for England, almost like an excuse to eat what I want, totally out of control! Not this time though, I kept hearing snippets of your advice and it was sooooo good getting into clothes again that wouldn't fasten up a few months ago. Don't get me wrong, I still indulged, wasn't a party pooper and enjoyed the lovely wine but I just cut back the next day........

Then week 3 happened!!!!!! We were visiting a Danish town near Santa Barbara which had the most amazing Danish Pastries, how do I know this?!!!! Well, they had samples on the counter and before I knew it I had tasted several!!!! They were sooooo good, especially the marzipan and custard one......sorry, getting carried away again. All downhill after that apart from having a brilliant time.

Forced myself to weigh in day after getting home, really pleased as only put 4lbs on, would usually put 7lbs on on average holiday. However, found it really hard to settle for first fast day on return, found I really had to psych myself up again. I did this by reading loads of posts on the forums....so thanks everyone for getting me back on track again. I've done one fast now and have been careful other days and have actually got the extra lbs off again....so here's to the last 7lbs.

Good luck everyone. Xx
I'm glad you had a wonderful time and thank you for the update! Oh, I haven't been to Solvang since I was a little kid, so thank you, I think I have just set my next day-trip destination. :)
Thanks Betsysgr8,
Solvang, yes that was the place with the amazing Danish pastries. What a beautiful place, so clean, lovely people and super shops. How lucky you are to live close by. Xx
Wow, you had a lovely holiday and did really well. Danish pastries would have been my undoing also  As you say, it can be a little difficult to get your focus back when you've let it slip but you seem to be back on track again.

I got you confused with another 'Granny' on here recently, asking her about her holiday in California etc etc, felt a bit stupid  when she had no idea what I was on about, such is the usual tone of my life, hee hee.

Glad you have shared your experiences with us all, I was wondering how it went, hence my gaff!!!

Oh, and welcome back,

Ballerina x
Thanks Ballerina, good to hear from you again.

Yes, it has been hard to focus on5:2 since our return but today is my second fast day....so here goes!!!!! On 1st cup of green tea with lemon and ginger!!

Is it just me or has the forum increased enormously in size since I went on holiday? There are also discussions about 'shredding ' '18:2'!!!! Definitely not up to speed yet!! :?:

Thanks again
Granny Lyn x
Yes, the forum is getting bigger whilst we are all trying to get smaller! There a lot of worrying things going on, like shredding?? Don't even know what that is but I don't even like the sound of it, another one is the 100 push up challenge, I am thinking about that one but I suspect 'thinking' is about as far as I will get  18:2? You've lost me on that one but I'm happy anyway, just like to see how everyone else gets on,

Ballerina x
:frown: It all sounds too painful, that's why I like line dancing
I'll have to see if I can find 18:2, I've probably got it totally wrong!

All the best
Granny Lyn
Whoops! Just checked and it's 16:8!!!! Will have to read your post again as it was late last night when I saw it!

What did you think of Yosemite? I climbed other in the 70's and revisited last summer to show my big son where his dad used to hang out - he was impressed with the place!
Awesome!!!

We were so impressed with the place, even more so as we were in Las Vegas the day before, the contrasts couldn't have been greater!

My husband's in forestry so a visit to see the giant sequoias was a must. We weren't disappointed, they were just so majestic. The place was just so peaceful and all the views so amazing, just wish we could have spent longer there. You were lucky to do so CreakyPete, no wonder your son was impressed.
