non-food treats
12 May 2013, 05:40
I felt like I deserved a treat for my accomplishments so far. Instead of cake, I decided to get a pedicure. I've also had a much-needed haircut.

I would like to treat myself to some new clothes, but I should wait 'til I've lost more (and am in a country where the clothes have a chance of fitting!) But it's fun fitting into things that were snug or impossible to get into not that long ago.

Fantastic idea! When I reached 65kg I went and purchased a couple of dress patterns (sewing). When I am down to 63kg I shall choose the material and make myself a new skirt so I have at least one that fits as everything is rather loose.

I too would love to hear what non food treats people have rewarded themselves with.

Great topic MaryAnn.

Great idea :) I'm waiting to get some new clothes. My jeans are starting to get very baggy.

I would like to reach the magic 9 stone (my original target weight) before I do. I have one pound to go, so am hoping this week's weigh in day or next's.

I realised that I reward myself with food! Use cake or a glass of wine when I've done a good job - or to cheer myself up! Hence the pounds/kilos adding up. All quite an emotional sort of thing.
So now I might look up a film I want to see, call a friend, buy some flowers or a plant for my garden, a book maybe or a favourite magazine. I'm widening my repertoire of "treats" which , hopefully, work.
Over the years I've collected quite a wardrobe of different size clothes as my weight has gone up and down - so maybe now I need to go through them and find what I've forgotten - and now fits me! Hopefully.
Love hearing what other people do. Hairdresser's a great idea.

Pammy, take a tip and ditch the clothes that are too big. I passed on all my larger clothes to friends and charity shops when I lost a lot of weight. When I regained about a stone and a half I had almost nothing to wear and what I had was at the limit... It was the kick I needed to find a new wagon to get on  I'm pleased to say I have very few clothes left now that aren't wearable (as in too small) and that's a great feeling  I am never again keeping clothes that are more than 1/2- 1 size bigger than my target weight clothes.

I haven't reached a target but I recently tried on all my clothes and have had a big sorting session! Most are going to the charity shop and the others are fitting me much better, particularly around the waist and hips. So to celebrate the new me, I had my shoulder length bob cut - to a 'pixie' style which really suits me. Lots of compliments, particularly from the menfolk who say I look at least 10 years younger - a great boost for a 58 year old! MOH is sprucing himself up to ward off the competition!

I think it's an excellent tack to reward yourself for losing weight on the 5:2! I do this, not only by buying myself the occasional new item of clothing, but also smaller treats like a new lipstick or eye shadow.

Great topic. I treated myself to a course of swimming coaching to improve my freestyle stroke something I have wanted to do for a long time. This also encourages me to swim more and do more drills which use far more calories than just ploughing up and down the pool. The other big advantage is that as I cant eat before swimming it makes missing meals easy.

Interested to hear about other folks treats.

Fab topic! I totally empathise with this!
In our family we always seem to reward with food treats or meals out etc and every occasion celebration centres around food. I'm also a pastry chef. This is why every previous diet I tried was destined to fail!
Anyway I am trying to get out of the habit of treating with food too. I bought myself a pair of jeans in the supermarket a month or so ago as all of mine were getting too loose and they were cheap so it won't matter when I shrink out of these too :-)
I also love nail varnish and lipsticks as small treats for doing well on my diet.
Once I get to my target weight I'm also going to get my hair cut really short and buy lots of nice, small clothes. I might invest more money in them though as I know the days of putting all the weight back on again are behind me. This is also why I'm throwing away/donating to charity all the clothes that I am shrinking out of too! :-)

Good topic - I think I have swopped comfort eating for comfort shopping!
I too have a fat / thin wardrobe. Loving going into the wardrobe now and then and finding something I couldn't even get past my thighs not that long ago is now almost wearable (if I don't sit down or eat /drink!). I have to be careful not to wait too long as some things have turned out to be baggy when I try them on.
I shouldn't need to buy more stuff but I have been doing. I think like JennyH10 I need to wait until I reach the weight I want to stick at and then start getting some better quality clothes in that size.
I am giving away a lot to the charity shops too so I can't be tempted to lapse again.

I agree this is a brilliant topic! I love looking forward to things other than food on my way home from work. Buying new clothes is an obvious one, but even just having time to relax rather than cooking/ food shopping/ eating so much is a real bonus!

Umleila - I shall be looking out for your post saying you have reached your target weight and have gone out for some retail therapy!

Oh and I must say - find a good dressmaker. I have lots of things I'm getting altered rather than binning/ giving away. Almost anything can be adjusted to a smaller size!

Oh I reward myself all the time  I really try to enjoy life and celebrate big and small achievments and events - both mine and others!

For myself a possible treat or reward could be:
A new bra
Anti-wrinkle cream or serum
Clothes, shoes, bags......
A massage
Nail polish
Make up
Perfume
Books
Flowers
Scented candles
A hotel stay
An hour with a personal trainer
Pedi or mani
Jewelry
A magazine
Rent a movie or two
Go to a spa
Go to a yoga retreat
A new hand creme or body scrub
Throw a party!
