Tension headache :-(
20 Jun 2013, 15:14
Before I start I'm going to say I am abit of a hypercondriac!

I have had a cold and it went to my head and had a bad head for a few days but the trouble is I start panicking that the headache is something more sinister and then I start getting this tension headache that I cannot shift no matter how much I tell myself it's not tension and I'm ok!

Does anyway get this type of headache? It's right where my temples are and feels like pressure. It's getting me down

Hi Claire I'm a migraine sufferer so got good idea were you're coming from but try not to assume the worst,
On one occasion years ago I'd taken quite a few tablets throughout the day with no joy so phoned down surgery on call for my doc
His advice to me was to take 4 paracetamol and go to bed!!! I didn't heed the advice coz of what I'd already taken, but left it 1hr and took 3.
When I woke up next morning it was gone and now do the same if its one of those bad headaches but diff meds for migraine, not sure if any of this helps you good luck+ hope all is well for tomorrow  Sue

i have always understood Sue one ought not go over 2 paracetamol 4 hourly as more can be toxic to your liver. Granted though your instructions were under medical supervision.

Migraines are the pits Claire you have my sympathy

Yes I thought 4 was way over the top!! Considering I'd told him what I had already taken but was desperate at time so took the 3 sometime later, and because of that I now take 3 straight away, but only 2 more IF needed about 6hrs later, I was really worried at time, told hubby exactly what I'd had before I went to bed + he checked on me from time to time.
Worse still this advice was given to me over the phone. :sleepy: Sue

It's OK to have say, two ibuprofen and two paracetamol if you really need to. Four paracetamol is OK as long as you're not repeating the dose 4 hours later! You are right that the toxic dose of paracetamol is fairly low and damages the liver, which does not show up for a few days so it is very important not to take too much.

I was having those tension headaches a few years back. They started as a simple headache or a headache from a cold and as soon I started thinking about it they turned into tension headaches.
Until one time, a few years back, I got one of them in London and I went to Boots to get some Ibuprofen. Luckily, there was a very kind lady who suggested Ibuprofen Tension Headache. I bought it, took a couple of them and the headache was gone. I was so happy that in the next days I bought 5 boxes!
Wanna guess what happened next? Because I had the tablets, I wasn't worried of tension headaches (I had the cure). Needless to say that I still have some of them, currently out of date. :-)

hi Claire I too get tension headaches and migraines, what I found that works quite well is holding/ washing your hands under hot water as hot as you can stand I know it sounds strange and I was sceptical at first too when a Dr suggested it to me for about 5 mins.
It help too if I get stuck somewhere and don't have migraine pills on me to stop it long enough to get to my meds.

Have you tried a little lavender mint lotion rubbed on your temples? very relaxing. Haven't had one of those headaches since my children were young but I do remember. The temple massage really does help. Hope you are feeling better now.
