Treat: historical books, particularly anything by Edward Rutherford or Sharon Penman.

Challenge: Anna Karenina. When I first had an ereader I downloaded lots of free classics and read and enjoyed quite a few, but Anna Karenina was hard going.

Bargepole: I have to agree on Shades of Grey!
TREAT: The Omnivore's Dilemma

CHALLENGE: The Master and his Emissary

BARGEPOLE: Anything by Kabat-Zinn
Treat - Small Gods, by Terry Pratchett. Read it annually at Xmas as a present to me.
Challenge - A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. A lovely book but sooo looong...
Bargepole - Dr Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Boring!
I thought 'My family and other Animals' was written by Gerrald Durrell.

Yes you're right Julie - Clare Balding's is 'My animals and other family' :like:
Treat: The Great Gatsby (which I've read several times since the age of 14, and can find something new in each time I read it)

Challenge: Franz Kafka

Bargepole: Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel - unlike a lot of people, just couldn't get into it, found it too dense and suffocating! Life is too short, too many other books to read!
Treat: I bought "Save me the Waltz" by Zelda Fitzgerald, but I keep getting interrupted when I sit down with it!!

Challenge: chick lit. I sometimes try to read what friends recommend and often just find it too poorly written and/or boring

bargepole: politics - I'll either agree with it and get in a pissy mood about the state of the country/world/human race or worse, I'll disagree with it and get in an even worse mood! lol
