Treat, challenge or bargepole??
06 Aug 2013, 22:59
Another book thread for all you faster / readers (and potential 5:2 book clubbers) out there ... 3 questions ...

Which book would you think of as a 'treat' to read?

Which book would you consider a challenge? :frown:

And finally, which book wouldn't you touch with a bargepole ...

Just a little 'icebreaker' to get the ball rolling (or keep it rolling,)

chat-f12/5-2-book-club-nominations-for-october-s-book-t7465.html

and post your nomination for October's book)

:geek: :rotfl: :geek:
TREAT: LOTR trilogy in one day and night sitting with slaves bringing me tidbits through the day.

CHALLENGE: Generally anything technical or filled with jargon. I tend to get brain mush after only a few pages.

BARGEPOLE: 50 Shades of Grey. Lots of reasons, mostly to do with the fact its badly written.
Treat: Atlas Shrugged

Challenge: The manual to my wifi signal amplification thingie.

Bargepole: The Quran

Please note that we are aware of this post but feel the author is entitled to express which book he or she does not wish to read. We do not feel this is a derogatory comment or intended to provoke. Please note the 'bargepole' word is simply part of the 'game' as created by the original poster and should be read as "I'm not interested in reading...", rather than meant in any derogatory sense unless elaborated as such in a response/subsequent discussion.
Treat - The Happiest Refugee Ahn Do - made me laugh, made me cry
Challenge - The Old Testament - I tried but was not up to the challenge
Bargepole - Chaucers Canterbury Tales - possibly from having to study it in school
Treat- The Coroner's lunch-funny andquirky little series set in Laos

Challenge- Les Miserables- just finished it- too much historical detail for me but liked getting more detail on the characters

Bargepole-hmm- anything too gory!
Oh - I didn't know we had a book club!

Treat: Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones; or re-reading anything by DWJ really but that's my favourite. (Anyone who likes Harry Potter should read the Chrestomanci series.)

Challenge: I have both War and Peace and Ulysses on the go, danger with both is if I leave them too long (already have) need to start from the beginning (again).

Bargepole: Da Vinci Code
Treat: Anything by Terry Pratchett

Challenge: War and Peace. Utterly impossible: Ulysses by James Joyce

Bargepole: Fifty Shades, for the same reason - so badly written.
Pineneeedles - 5:2 bookclub just really getting off the ground now - follow the link at the head of the post for more info, if you haven't done already. See how it evolved by looking back at the 'what are you reading this week post' by Julieathome. You haven't missed anything, so don't worry!

Not surprised you have missed seeing the info if you have had your head in both War and Peace and Ulysses at the same time  ... Wow, reading stamina! :like: :like: :like:
Not sure I could match that! Have read W&P years ago on degree course, and tried bits of U! But now life is too short, so tend to agree with shachat!!
I've had to have a good think about this!

Treat: anything by Philippa Gregory (and I have recently found 'My family and other Animals', by Clare Balding, very enjoyable). Also Victoria Hislop.

Challenge: Tin Drum by Günter Grass

Bargepole: Anything Mills & Boone, Danielle Steele and badly written, but popular offerings!
PFT - deffo agree re Gunter Grass!! Love your new strap line by the way!!
Gigi- i love the Colin Cotteril books. Have you read the "role of Pool in Communist Asia'?

Treat: Clive Cussler- Isaac Bell novels. Nonsense and indulgent fun- a rip roaring good read
Challenge: anything in a foreign language, much as I would love to read even a children's story in Spanish, French or Cantonese- can just about manage Scots Gaelic

Bargepole: anything by Shakespeare (ducks under the parapet)- detest and hate with a passion
Brilliant thread Silverdarling.
Treat - I found my school days books in Mum's loft so I'm reading through the Heidi books, Little Women, and Bronte books, the days of innocence.

Challenge - any 'book' on my Kindle, the darn contraption's got a mind of its own. Theres nothing like holding a real paper book in your hand.

Bargepole - The History books OH has his nose stuck in.

Chris x
Treat: anything by Sophie Kinsella
Challenge: I can't remember of one now
Bargepole: Da Vinci Code. It was one of the very few books I couldn't finish, it bored me to death...
Treat: Victoria Hislop
Challenge : To Set Prometheus Free -A C Grayling
Bargepole: romantic fiction
Treat. Rereading Georgette Heyer novels because of the humour or a new Stephen Leather story about Spider Shepherd. Escapism is good!

Challenge. Charles Dickens novels.

Barge pole. My Latin text books & Shades of Grey because they sound like poorly written tosh.
