This is my new 'Geordie' coaster
- sadly, the wine will have to wait until tomorrow, cos it's a fast day!

PS I'm told by those who know, that up here in the North East (ie Tyneside, you know, the Likely Lads / When the Bo-o-at comes in/ Pitman Painters / Billy Elliott coun'ry) that the correct pronunciation is .... (drum roll!) ...

WH' AYE MAN!!!!
Sorry, but I believe I must have lost something in the translation.

Being another yank, I'm not certain either but this link may help:

Reminds me of when we saw Newcastle United play football many years ago. Unfortunately my Dad supported their arch rivals - Sunderland!
Looks cool, pet. :)
... Or canny, even. Lol!
Mint! I think that's a saying from that region!
Sunderland??? My kitty is a black cat and her full name is Miss Prada Sunderland!!!

This is for all of you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA1g33J5NjA
Sunderland?? Nae hun, they be Mackems   !!

Geordie = born on North side of Tyne, preferably within a mile of the river, eg Tynemouth, Wallsend, North Shields, Byker, Walker, etc

Mackems = broadly south of the Tyne, but specifically Sunderland ( actually Wearside)

Viz.

mackem
An inhabitant of Sunderland. Often connected to the shipbuilding days where the Wearsiders would "mack em" (make them) before the Tynesiders would "tack em" (take them) to be fitted with engines.
"We mackem and ye tackem"

And for those who are interested - see this (extensive) extract from the Urban Dictionary

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=mackem

This gives an authentic flavour of the partisanship prevalent in these parts ...
But loved the youtube post
I have a friend from Amble. Her accent has softened, but when I visited, I couldn't understand anyone else!
MaryAnn - I live 6 miles from Amble, and 4 miles from Ashington - the accents do vary a lot even in a few miles. Further up the Northumberland coast and into the countryside west (Tynedale) and north, toward Alnwick (10 miles from me) and up to Berwick (where most people sound much more Scottish) there is a detectable difference in the accents. Natives to the area can even tell what village people come from by their accent sometimes.

And there is still a lot of old dialect, and in the old coalfields around Ashington 'pitmatic'

Thank you for the YouTube link, TML13. I just had the most delightful two hour (±) meandering through Mark Knopfler's marvelous music. What a treat.
Silverdarling, I'm a Glasgow/London girl but what better surname to give to a black kitty???

You are welcome, Bobby!
