1st Week - No Loss Eek!
08 Apr 2013, 09:06
Hi folks,

I fasted last week Tues & Thurs and kept rigid to the 500 cals on these days.

I am a scale hopper and was weighing myself everyday and some mornings I was 9st 8.75lbs (starting weight 9st 10.5lbs) However I popped on scaled this morning and Im back to my original weight! Arrrgh

Officially weigh in is tomorrow as I started last tues. Fastmong Monday & Wednesday this week.

Does it take a while to kick in the weight loss?

Hi Timbermiss :)
Scale hopping is something of a problem for many of us, but you'll learn that your weight fluctuates on a daily basis for any number of reasons - food not yet passed through, water retention, time of day and many other random factors!

The best way to notice the downward trend is to pick a day of the week and time (first thing in the morning, after the loo & before breakfast is ideal for the most pleasing readings!) and only weigh then. If you must weigh inbetween (I do some days) then don't put any stock in what the scales say - the only weight that matters is your 'official' weekly weigh, and with this you should see the numbers going down.

Remember that in the first couple of weeks you'll be losing more water weight than fat, and regaining some of that water even as the fat is coming off, so the numbers may well go up and down a little for the first few weeks.

I can vary by several pounds depending on time of day and time of the week, so only weigh after my second fast, first thing in the morning :) It's also worth bearing in mind that some weeks it might look like you've gained a bit or stayed the same - but when the average loss is around a pound a week, it's easy for such a relatively small amount to be masked by your body's natural variation in weight. You could have lost and not even realise for a week or so!

Another good idea is to measure yourself, as inch loss can be more of an indicator than the scales.

Sounds good to me :) But it's not what I think that matters really, it's what is right for you that matters!

I didn't lose anything for the first 3 weeks so some of us are slow starters! I came from Slimming World straight onto 5:2 and I think it takes a while for the metabolism to make the adjustment. I also didn't know anything about TDEE and was eating 500 cals on fast days when in fact I should only have been eating 440. When I sorted that out the weight started to drop. Slowly - average half a pound a week but I can live with that!

Don't despair - if you do it right, it'll work!

Hi Timbermiss. I am in the same position: last week was my first, fasted Mon & Thurs, weighed myself Fri am, weight loss 1.5 lb, weighed in Mon am (my weigh in time and date), and find that I have GAINED a pound from what I started. I have had some really helpful emails though and I fully intend to carry on. They say give it a good month to be able to look at your average weight loss.
I also took a measurement of my waist and have found that I have lost 1/2 inch there. Some progress at any rate!
Timbermiss have you got a 'Weight Mate" - someone who is supporting your diet and with whom you chat to about it? I haven't (my husband thinks this diet is a load of nonsense). Could we support each other perhaps? If not, no problem!
