On Tuesday, I contemplated doing a complete 36 hour fast but since I had a few beers on the night before, that wasn't a good time to do that due to the possible effects on my blood sugar. At that time, I submitted a post on that subject and it is good to see that there is still quite a good discussion going on there as I write so once again, I would like to thank you for all of the comments there.

However, I mentioned in that other post that I would instead be centering my first ever complete 36 hour fast around today's fast instead of the one on Tuesday. To that end, I had finished last night's evening meal by 6:30pm and that means that even though I have only just got up out of bed, I have actually already fasted for a full 12 hours which means that I am already a third of the way through my 36 hour fast as I write.

I knew that I was freeing up an extra 600 calories for my feast days by not eating anything today and so, I ate a bit more yesterday than what I normally would on a Thursday. One of the good things about the 5:2 diet is that you don't need to restrict your calorie intake on a feasting day and that means that I wasn't too bothered by those extra calories that were consumed yesterday. However, I didn't go over the top with that yesterday and those extra calories which I consumed were mostly in the form of protein.

Furthermore, unlike on Monday night, no alcohol was consumed yesterday. After eating those extra calories yesterday, I felt just as stuffed as I would be after a proper eating binge. A normal eating binge would consist mostly of carbs though, and I would normally feel hungry again fairly soon afterwards. Since yesterday's extra calories were mostly made up of protein though, I didn't have that feeling of hunger soon afterwards and even now, I am still not feeling the least bit hungry.

That should therefore, put me in a much better space for today's fast as compared to Tuesday and I am now looking forward to what lies ahead. Since last night's evening meal, I have consumed nothing more than water and and now having my first green tea of the day. That is all that I will be consuming until I have my breakfast tomorrow morning when this fast will be broken.

On normal fasting days, I would still drink diet coke. That is actually fine for a normal fasting day because it contains virtually no calories which means that it is not going to cause a breach of the 600 calorie limit for such a day, even if I were to drink gallons of the stuff. However, I have now been cutting out the diet coke on fast days due to its Caffeine and Aspartame content which could interfere with the blood sugar levels.

Furthermore, although diet coke contains virtually no calories, normal diet coke still contains 2 calories per 500ml with diet coke zero containing 1.5 calories per 500ml (I have taken that info from Coca-Cola's own website). That is still enough to spoil an occasion where I am trying to consume no calories at all. That in turn makes diet coke out of bounds for my 36 hour complete fast, which is another reason why I will be sticking to green tea and water.
I think you're right in being careful with the diet coke, artificial sweeteners are thought to increase appetite. Signaling to your body calories are coming and not delivering might very well mess things up.

There are also the effects of the caffeine which can disrupt the overall sleep pattern for the following night. Furthermore, caffeine is also very addictive and I have found that when I have tried to stop taking caffeine altogether after taking a lot of it, I have ended up with a bad headache a day or so afterwards due to the resulting withdrawal symptoms.

That means that the only safe way to get away from drinking a lot of diet coke is to continue to consume it for a while, but in gradually decreasing amounts until you get to the point where you are no longer consuming any of it. Having said that though, you can buy caffeine free diet coke these days, but that still leave the problems with the artificial sweeteners.
