Isn't this the prettiest picture!

After getting to 100 eggs for this week (since last Sunday) I thought it would make a prettty photo. So many patterns and sizes from our15 hens (entertained by 2 cocks ..thats the term for a male quail in case you didnt know). getting 8 to 11 eggs a day these days.

If you look carefully enough you should find at least 10 sets of "pattern styles" cause ever hen lays a different pattern always. I proved it once by separating a hen and each afternoon it was the exact same pattern.

Speaking of quails in the context of 5:2ing, i gave away 50 of them to my darling neighbour who quickly proceeded to make a salad of chopped quail eggs, onion olive oil, mint, salt and pepper, served on a crispbread.

I thought what a remarkable idea for a fast day dinner (or lunch) if you do the lunch option). especially if its a low calorie crispbread. Or course you can substitute chicken eggs.

She sent me a picture of the quail egg salad. The picture made me hungry as im in the middle of a fast and havent eaten for now 16 hours. growl goes my tummy but maybe just maybe i will see 69 on the scales tomorrow morning so its worth it.

So pretty! I'd love to have chickens or quail, but I'm afraid my cat wouldn't allow it!

could you not put them in an enclosure. our cat ignores them but brings back the wild ones for tea..

Grace will learn that they are just part of her world. to start you just need a simple pet enclosure of any sort.. get maybe 5 .. no more. 1 male for company. (officially not necessary for egg laying but i think its cruel to deny women, the company of men lol) get some finch or canary food and a quick visit to petshop for some simple extras quails need for sustenance.

you will be addicted to quail rearing.

my next step is to start incubating eggs but in need to convince OH. Initially he said no to the simple act of keeping quail but my powers of persuasion won him in the end and now he spends the same if not more time building cages, lids, and even hand feeding a sick quail. He did have to make the brave move of executing and burying a very sick quail yesterday but he did it humanely.

Watching quails hatch would be so kewl even just the once.

They look like a great fast day emergency ration to me. A few of these ready boiled in the fridge in case hunger strikes. I checked on MFP and you could eat 5 for only 70 calories!
Very pretty!

I'm eyeing my kale at the moment (cavolo Nero). We have had a few hard frosts now so it might be ready to start picking......

rawkaren wrote: Hi. I was wondering if there is any interest in setting up a gardeners corner? I have looked on the forums and can't seem to find anything live. My reasons are entirely selfish as I just started out this year so on a big learning curve. It would be great to be able to trade tips as well as hearing from those who are able to grow exotic stuff depending in where in the world we all live. I have absolutely no idea how to set it up so if any interest I'm sure Moogie or Caro can help get us started. Looking forward to tea and cake in the potting shed.

I trained as a grower, the same but different.

I'm happy to go into the finer points of cation exchange, phycomycetes etc etc.

Well, no I'm not actually, very rusty.

Hi @david f. Thanks for volunteering! My sprouting broccoli is looking a bit windswept after all of our weather. A lot of leaves blown off but the centres are still in tact. Any advice appreciated!

Hi @andy, I'm from Brighton and this brought back memories. I always admired Preston Rock garden and hadn't thought about it since moving to Cornwall in 1990.

Thank you for the reminder and I must say that you are doing a good job, it's beautiful.

After reading some of the posts here, is it OK if I join you please?

I'm not able to do as much gardening as I would like due to sciatica which keeps flaring up, so my garden is not as good as it once was. At the moment it resembles a paddy field, hubby keeps talking about which veggies to plant this year - I think rice will be at the top of the list if this rain doesn't stop soon!

Please do join us @coffeetime. It's rather a seasonal thread but it's fabulous to read about gardens all over the world.
