Rhubarb, rhubarb ..
02 Jun 2015, 17:15
So I saw this pack of 2 huge rhubarb stalks for 59p (59p!) in Aldi. I haven't had rhubarb for years because shop prices are ridiculous.

It gave me a reason to crack open the tub of pure Stevia powder that I bought as soon as it became legal and have never had a use for. I basically sweated chunks of rhubarb in a little water in my ceramic pan, being careful to only add a few grains of stevia as it is powerful stuff. The tub should see me out.

And that's it, Made two portions with full fat Greek yoghurt on top. If you were expecting an elaborate recipe, with photo of artistic arrangement on a plate, you've got the wrong girl

Did anyone else ever eat it raw when they were kids? If someone gave you some from their allotment, you would peel it, cover the bottom of a saucer with white sugar, dunk the end in the sugar, then eat your way up the stalk, adding sugar on each bite. Contest to be the toughest kid, least sugar.

Funny, I couldn't stand rhubarb as a kid, it set my teeth on edge having to eat it with Bird's custard. I love it now and acquire it whenever I can, we planted it in our garden in Tassie as we were told possums wouldn't touch it. Wrong!!! We gave up. I get it from other, possum free establishments now.
Anyway, my favourite rhubarb recipe is one from Cafe Paradiso cook book which is a rhubarb and ginger crumble with caramalised pecans and is to die for!
Barbarit, you are tougher than me!!

Ps i just remembered one time as a little kid, saying to my big sister, whats that ( pointing to jam roly poly on the table)
" pigs head" she replied..i was horrified and she very happily ate my share as well as hers! X

We have a massive rhubarb patch, it seems to love it at our place. I've frozen several bags and have stewed several batches. The only problem is that I hardly ever have any dessert, and (OK two problems) it takes so much darned sugar to make it palatable. Does everyone else have that sensation that all the enamel on ones teeth has been stripped off after eating it?

Yes! When I was a young'un (3-10yrs old) we held an annual rhubarb ceremony in the garden ....
1. Watch the rhubarb grow for weeks and weeks in anticipation - heightened excitement day by day
2. Nag Mum for weeks on end, is it ready - no, is it ready-no, is it ready-no, IS IT READY please - YES!
3. Run round the neighbourhood and collect all children
4. Hand out sugar in the saucers, good hostess skills and wander down the garden to venue
5. Peel, dip and savour the sour and sweet treat - then watch to see who keeled over with tummy ache first
Next to the rhubarb were the dangerous gooseberry bushes - raw gooseberries and sugar, that was another ceremony we just had to experience! YUCK
Happy days

I used to eat rhubarb dipped in sugar as a child.
We also used to eat spoonsful of condensed milk or spread it on bread and butter- preferably a crust.

@CandiceMarie yeh, I was the last of four, so my Mum always told me the gooseberry bush story was not true but the fruit story was real, just like me.

We also have a big rhubarb patch and we cook it with stevia plus strawbs and vanilla or ginger. I bought a new cookbook last week 'my new roots'. Amazing carrot, walnut and rhubarb muffins. Great combo. Who knew?

My grandma had a rhubarb patch. I only remember eating rhubarb pie, though, never eating it raw. I probably would have liked that because I like super sour food.
