In need of motivation :(
30 Jan 2014, 19:37
Hi,

I started the 5:2 shortly after new year. Since then I've been doing great, I've lost half a stone and found the fasting days bearable (not quite a joy, but I didn't dread them either...). Recently I've noticed my weight loss slowing right down (stopping...), even after trying hard to eat healthily on my non-fasting days.

This week I've had a 'mare! Fast day Monday, I decided to have a hot chocolate (with whipped cream and marshmallows!) and today, on my second "fast day" I've eaten chocolate! What's going on!! I just feel like I've lost all motivation. Maybe it's because it's freezing outside, or I've been coming down with a chest infection and I'm not really feeling myself. Maybe these are all excuses and I just need to get back on it... :frown:

Help!! (I need a slap round the virtual chops!)

Until Janeg comes along with her patented wet fish, her's my 2p worth-

Apart from your Monday Hot Choc, and today's piece of chocolate, how did the rest of the Fasts go? If those were your only slips you may not have done too much damage, but either way they are done, forget them and move on.

Can I suggest calorie counting for a couple of weeks (I use MyFitnessPal) it might help you get more of a grip on your non-fast days.

Having said all that you have lost half a stone in 4 weeks which is about the average for the forum :like:

This week has been the only time I've slipped up. The hot chocolate did come with a slice of cake... so obviously I ate that as well :\

Today hasn't been too bad as I've stuck to my fast day dinner atleast...

Hi:

It seems part of your lack of motivation comes from your unhappiness about not continuing to lose weight at the rate you experienced your first four weeks.

The average weight loss of all people doing 5:2 on this site is about a pound a week. Most women lose less than that. Your current weight loss is about twice the average, so a slowdown should be expected. Here is how the numbers work and the amount of loss you can reasonably expect going forward: 5-2-diet-chat-f6/topic6600.html

And here is an example of the 'smoothness' of weight loss under 5:2: 5-2-diet-chat-f6/topic6491.html#p71147

Good Luck!

 Hi @fatcat89 And Welcome
We all get those days the best advice I can give is to forget it and put it behind you because it will eat away at you otherwise you've done really well today so focus on that.

I don't mind losing weight slowly as it should mean it stays off...

I don't think it helps that I bought my usual size trousers in Next the other day and I couldn't do them up! I swear sizes are getting smaller :P grrrr!! I was convinced they'd be a lovely fit as I've been feeling less bloated.

Onwards and upwards I guess! Thank you for all your kind comments and advice!

Oh isn't it just rude when hot chocolate come with cake!
Take heart, you have lost rather well and sadly, your body can't really keep that up. If it did there would be so much excess skin it would not be pretty!
You are making a lot of changes when you start 5:2ing. It's not just about the food, it's a change in how we look at food and life!
Your rude chocolate is a blip. As Sian says you are probably still on reduced calories for the day so that's a good thing. Put it down to experience, move on and mentally set yourself to do your next fast.
Hope the chest infection doesn't come to anything.
Oh, and don't beat yourself up. That's my job with the wet fish! ;)

Fatcat, just take a look at some progress charts. I'm absolutely fuming today as I'm not shifting, but take a look at my chart and see that it's a slow steady journey with blips all over the place. Keep with it. :like:

Morning,

I could have written your post word for word - in fact, I was going to do exactly that, but you've saved me the trouble! I started the 5:2 on 8 jan and have lost the same amount of weight as you to date. This week I seemed to go completely off the rails (much worse than you) even though I don't feel the regime is that difficult and I am delighted with the results.

I guess what this all proves is that these blips aren't unusual, and if we just leave them behind and keep on the straight and narrow most of time WE WILL SUCCEED!

Best of luck!

Re: Blips (I'm suitably qualified to talk about this because it is a non-fast day today & I have just totally unnecessarily, because I'm not hungry, scoffed a load of cake....no idea why).
The way I look at it is this - after many years of a "mindless" relationship with food, a serious habit has been formed. Is it really so surprising that from time to time we slip up a bit? All that matters is whether we pick ourselves up & get back on the horse, so to speak.

It is early days for me, but I am not finding the fast days to be the problem. For me, it's the non fast ones - my mind seems to revert to the bad old days' habits, but the good news is, not all the time.

It's a bit like looking at the purple "trend line" on your progress tracker. There may be ups & downs week by week......but we are all moving in a downward direction, which is brilliant! Some will have an easier time than others, some will get to where they want to be faster than others, but we are only in competition with ourselves. Only I decide what to eat - nobody forces me one way or another. I got to this size all by myself and only I can fix it! All I know is, since starting 5 2 at the end of November last year, I am suddenly making better food choices much more of the time. I am suddenly exercising much more often, my mood has improved no end, I am finding life much more amusing.....good news all round!

So, cut yourself some slack, my fellow faster! You are human...and we can all relate to that! You will always be met with understanding here......not to mention support & encouragement.

Keep the faith......& keep up the good work because you are honestly doing just great!

Ahh you guys are so lovely  glad I'm not the only one who has blips! It's early days with this new WOL/WOE for me so I'm guessing there will be slip ups along the way. Wise words, @Hazelnut20... it's going to take a while to fully beat the bad habits I've developed over years of bad eating!

I'm blaming the weather.. go away rain!!! :rain: :umbrella:

All of the above is good advice, plus your new trousers might be slightly different in size - it happens all the time and is one reason I never buy on line (I know you didn't) even though I hate clothes shopping.

My husband is a devil for buying clothes without trying them on when I'm not with him. He actually has good taste so is ok to buy by himself  . He's generally my stylist too :like: .But he has 'come a cropper' with Next. After years of buying tops/jumpers from there, he dashed in just prior to a holiday and bought a few tops in his usual style/size. He just packed them as he knew they would be OK and then found the sizing had changed and were unwearable! Doesn't shop there much now.
