Just thought this might be of interest as it shows how easy it is to overestimate the calories in a portion of food or drink.

I think that sums it up really.

I certanly use to guzzle all that wine...

Pasta and rice are not brill; I guess we fill up on veggies.
I've used the portion pots in the past and have found them to be useful. At first many things do seem a bit on the small side for a portion but others, like rice and couscous, seem ok. I thought they were a useful tool and are sometimes quicker and easier than using scales.
I weigh all my carbs now. I find it far easier than trying to guess what a portion looks like!
Alcohol is always interesting, but its calories, while known, are so easy to consume and add up so fast. The ones I remember when I'm drinking:

Pint Guinness - 210
Pint of IPA - 320
Normal shot whiskey - 105 + mixer (might be just as much as whiskey)
Standard glass (if there is such a thing) of red wine - 220
Bottle of red wine - 620

A night at the pub with a few glasses of wine or 3 or 4 pints can be well over half a person's TDEE - and then there is dinner, plus what you ate before arriving.

I'm dejected just thinking about it.
My trick to combat portion size problems? Come and live in a tiny flat in Paris like mine with just enough space for a tiny dishwasher, buy all new tiny plates, bowls etc to fit in tiny dishwasher, and hey-presto slash your portion sizes!! The best part is I don't even feel like I've cut down as the tiny plate is full..funny how so much of portion control is visual!
My next dinnerware set is going have a classic ring inside the edge, about 2 inches in, so I can use that as a 'food, do not pass', visual check.
Nicky, good solution. I bought smaller bowls to eat my breakfast porridge from.

You could fill 4 portions worth in the regular sized ones I had and I never realised I was eating so much until I used a measuring cup to see how much; I was horrified!!
portion sizes in Japan are tiny. That's helped a lot!
Hi Simoclev - where do you get your alcohol calories from? I've always used 180 for a pint of real ale, and 500 for a bottle of red wine, from MFP

Hi:

Every beer has a different amount of alcohol and therefore calories. There are beers at 2% or less alcohol content, and I have had a couple with 14%. Most 'regular' ales are 5% or more. Many people don't realize this. I got the Guinness from here: http://caloriecount.about.com/calories- ... eer-i70036

I got the IPA from the brewery for a kind I drink sometimes, but the fact is I know of IPAs that contain 100 calories more per pint than what I mentioned in the post (yes, over 400 cal per pint). If you tend to drink pilsners or light lagers, the calorie count will be less.

If you go to the link above there is also a link to wine. If you choose 'red table wine' you will see 150 per 6oz glass. In the US, a bottle is a little over 25 oz, so a bottle comes in at a little over 600. I know this is true for most red wines I drink (I always check the calories with the brand if I can).

Hope this helps.

Beer is bad news full stop. 500 cals....600 cals....400....4000 cals does it matter?
