A nice article in the NY Times comparing the risks and benefits of sweeteners vs. sugar: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/28/upsho ... 0002&abg=0

Unfortunately, this info doesn't take into account those of us for whom artificial sweeteners taste so bad we'd rather drink urine...not joking. Of course, I stopped drinking soda years ago, other than maybe twice yearly root beer floats (using natural root beer, of course). I don't pretend it's a "diet friendly" food (or even food!), I just have it once in a great while. Given I've seen people actually addicted to diet soda--drinking it in preference to water or any other beverages--I consider it dangerous to downplay the (unknown) risks involved in artificial anything. And I just can't get past the irony of ordering a "diet" drink with a bacon cheeseburger...
