Salt cravings
08 Apr 2013, 12:14
This isn't really a 5:2 query, but I wonder if anyone has read any research on salt cravings? Even in childhood- when I ate little because of bad tonsillitis and didn't enjoy supposed children's favourites like orange squash and tomato ketchup which I found, and find, too sickly-sweet- I would sneak to the salt 'pig' for a pinch as a treat. I'm still keen and despite trying all the usual tricks to wean myself off it- lots of other spices etc- salty things are always what I crave. Chili comes nearest to the same little blissful kick.

I know that medical advice varies and that the 'salt is deadly' line has been modified, but I'm idly curious about why I can take or leave sweet things usually but crave salt. I find myself wondering if like the 'super tasters' who can't bear sprouts because the bitter-tasting chemical really affects them, there may be 'sub tasters'....

Until I know more I shall take (things with) a pinch of salt but avoid the bland fillers like potatoes that I wouldn't want without it

I recently came across this (could be completely wrong):

I haven't tested any of it, but it sounds interesting if true.

Interesting. Thanks for that Paul. Worth it for the recommended swap for chocolate in itself :)
