There is an interesting article in the Guardian today on Cuba:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/ap ... betes-cuba
Researchers found that in Cuba in the early 1990s the population lost an average of 5.5kg (12lb)in weight during the five years of a Western imposed economic crisis. Between 1991-95 the Cuban government imported 1.5m bicycles because of petrol shortage.
"so far, no country or regional population has successfully reduced the distribution of body mass index or reduced the prevalence of obesity through public health campaigns or targeted treatment programmes". And later...
"powerful evidence that a reduction in overweight and obesity would have major population-wide benefits. To achieve this is perhaps the major public health and societal challenge of the century."
Probably best to read this after viewing the three part series "The Men Who Made Us Fat". viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15
