Thanks for that Phil - it appears my risk is only 7.5%, with a heart age of 53, on the basis of my blood test results and home BP measurements - and postcode!
I'm glad I invested in a home machine, the readings are very consistent which gives me confidence and they are miles lower than in the surgery (around 115/70 as opposed to 150/90)!
Wishing you well izzy - hopefully 5:2 will help you with your weight loss and you'll have that in your control, if not your age  very best wishes to you :clover:

If I hadn't had a first degree relative who had a heart attack/angina, under 60, I'd have a 7.6% risk.

I know my dad's heart disease was lifestyle related. Lots of stress in his life, heavy smoker, drank a lot, every day. Is it actually a true indicator of added risk, if this is the case?

It's epidemiology, so in a large population the chances of having a heart event in the next 10 years were higher if you had a relative who had experienced one.

I guess it is accounting for genetics, without having your DNA
I don't have anything informed or smart to offer, but I do have *hugs*!
I was 7 for cholesterol but other vitals were good so wasn't prescribed statins. I took plant sterols and upped my soy protein intake and it came down to 4.9 where it has stayed for 3 years now. You can improve the LDL/HDL ratio with exercise - mine is very good as a result. My wife is on metformin but that just limits her HBA1c to 7%, so you are a whisker off achieving that through diet. Incidentally most people don't have any side effects from statins, though I'm glad I'm managing without. (OK read the entire thread and see you are only 6.1 on HBA1c.)
