Breakfast comparisons
08 Jul 2013, 10:40
I've just had my after fast brunch. Out of curiosity I measured out two types of 'standard' English breakfasts that would be eaten at home.

I compared a mini 'english' breakfast with a bowl of cornflakes.

English Breakfast consisted of
half a baked potato, sliced
1 slice of middle back bacon
4 small mushrooms
1 small egg
2 teaspoons of oil to fry all of the above in.

336 kcals and I feel stuffed and should stay this way probably till dinner time.

1 cup of cornflakes
1 cup of full fat milk (I like a lot of milk with my cornflakes)
2 tablespoons sugar

295 kcals if I had eaten cornflakes today. I know from past experience I would have been prowling for more food within 2 hours.

Its not very scientific, but for me I consider that the mini breakfast has won out, it has 41 extra calories, but is much higher in nutritional value than the bowl of cornflakes and will last longer in the stomach. I could have cut out 80kcals by grilling the bacon, mushrooms and potato and having scrambled egg, but its not a fast day so I enjoyed a bit of fried food.

Have you ever been shocked by the differences between a so called healthy breakfast and an unhealthy breakfast? Or the staying power of one breakfast or meal over another?

Very much so! After I do a liquid fast I quite often have a bacon & egg breakfast -

2 slices of small, thin brown toast (110 cals, I forget the brand)
2 medium eggs (160 cals)
5 cherry tomatoes (20 cals) (I'm not a mushroom fan!)
4 slices lean smoked ham (52 cals) 'fried' in the pan
342 cals, very filling indeed! (I use a teensy drop of oil and spread it around the pan, so maybe let's round it up to 350!)

Sometimes I have that for a fasting dinner, it's so filling.

My fave breakfast at the moment is a bowl of strawberry crisp with natural yogurt. It's probably a similar amount of calories to the above, but gives me a nice sweet fix first thing and really stuffs me!

I've always loved cereal, used to have a whole cupboard full of about a dozen different kinds, but it doesn't fill me up and just makes me want more. I haven't touched a normal cereal in weeks now since I rediscovered country crisp!

I gave up boxes of cereal years ago realising that the cardboard box was probably more nutritious. My favourite breakfast 3 times a week used to be

1 banana sliced
3 strawberries sliced finely
A good sprinkle of blueberries
2 heaped spoons of plain Greek yoghurt
1 heaped tablespoon Mixed seeds (grind if you want)
1 teaspoon lecithin
Splash of flaxseed oil

Do not eat on a fast day but it remains my go to brunch a couple of days a week. The other beaut breakfast i think is poached egg on large mushroom with trimmings some fresh herbs chopped finely and seasoning. Enjoy
