I've just had my after fast brunch. Out of curiosity I measured out two types of 'standard' English breakfasts that would be eaten at home.
I compared a mini 'english' breakfast with a bowl of cornflakes.
English Breakfast consisted of
half a baked potato, sliced
1 slice of middle back bacon
4 small mushrooms
1 small egg
2 teaspoons of oil to fry all of the above in.
336 kcals and I feel stuffed and should stay this way probably till dinner time.
1 cup of cornflakes
1 cup of full fat milk (I like a lot of milk with my cornflakes)
2 tablespoons sugar
295 kcals if I had eaten cornflakes today. I know from past experience I would have been prowling for more food within 2 hours.
Its not very scientific, but for me I consider that the mini breakfast has won out, it has 41 extra calories, but is much higher in nutritional value than the bowl of cornflakes and will last longer in the stomach. I could have cut out 80kcals by grilling the bacon, mushrooms and potato and having scrambled egg, but its not a fast day so I enjoyed a bit of fried food.
Have you ever been shocked by the differences between a so called healthy breakfast and an unhealthy breakfast? Or the staying power of one breakfast or meal over another?
