Tummy rumbling
12 Jan 2015, 11:36
Hi all,

I wondered if anyone has any times for dealing with loud tummy rumblings? On my fast days there are points in the day where I feel hungry, but not excessively so, but my tummy gets so loud with the rumbling! In a quiet office and in meetings it gets really noticeable and people start to pass comment (especially the resident 5:2 haters who use it as proof that 5:2 must be really bad for you). I have tried having a glass of water or a peppermint tea, but that only seems to make it gurgle louder!

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to quieten a loudly rumbling tummy that don't use any or much of your daily calorie allowance? Thanks!

This is a regular occurrence for me on monday's especially. Drink loads of coffee, tea and water.
Also bedtime is a nightmare when I lay there and all I hear is the grumbling, in that instance I just lay on my side but I suppose that doesn't help at your work.

That doesn't happen to me any more but it used to in the beginning and as you say one work colleague in particular would make her point that fasting wasn't good for you! At that time I think I just drank more and more but of course I ended up going to the loo all the time!

I rumble really badly too ... my belly gets hungry way before the rest of me .. the only thing I find is liquid but lots of it I figure if I fill the tum up there are less gaps for it to churn around in

I always get a glass of water or tea when I hear mine rumbling. It usually goes away fairly quickly.
As for someone making comments that 5:2 isn't good for you, you can always ask them where they got their medical degree.

I dont know of any cures for a growling tum but if it's any consolation, at least it's a reminder that your fast is succeeding and yr tum is empty..therefore giving yr digestive system a rest! X

I find that drinking first plain water and then some sparkling water does something for me, it stops the noice or emptiness, but you get a little gassy.... a little burp... lol

I would try a teaspoon of metamucil in a glass of water. It forms into gel in your tummy. I think that would work to fool the tummy with very few calories. I would have some in a tiny container in my work bag. I also had a tiny container of chicken stock powder too. One time I got them mixed up! Instead of a nice cup of chicken clear broth I'd put the metamucil in a cup of boiling hot water! :coffee: :bowl:

When I hear the tummy rumble that's a sign to me that fasting/body repair is "at work" and I am actually delighted to hear it. In my days of constant eating, I rarely heard the lovely sound. Mind you when I'm thinking that I'm not nearby other people other than family members and there's is rumbling too.

Yes, I agree with @Juliana.Rivers. Who's to say tummy rumbling is a sign that 5:2 is bad for you. It might be a sign that 5:2 is good for you. Tummy rumbling is a natural human occurrence and other people better get used to it.

With the rumble you can exclaim "Earthquake!" (ladies) or even "Beans!" (guys), then quickly change the subject.

juliana(1) is making mud pies.

Juliana(2) suggests a hard hat and claiming the area a construction site.

So how does drinking something then hearing "Bloop, bloop, gurgle!" - like you're an innocent bystander at the Labrea tar pit - improve the situation? Ahh. By invoking your 'official teacher voice' to say : "Eruption imminent. Please stand back?" while pointing them to a safe exit.

Ive been googling

Rumbling is also termed borborygmic convulsions. (borborygmus is greek for stomach rumble)

Normally just a sign of an empty stomach though http://www.healthline.com/health/abdomi ... ds#Causes2 says it can be related to abnormal things, not just hunger.

Wish I could help, but I don't really get loud rumblings that can be heard by other people. I can feel them, but they are very subtle audio-wise. I do use the fiber (I like the acacia clear fiber, it doesn't have a bunch of stuff in it; don't forget to look at the calories!) to delay eating on light days; also helps prevent the day after constipation.
