Is less than 500 calories OK?
17 Jun 2013, 16:33
Hi!

This is my 8th week, and I have found it easier to just eat once a day - as I find the Calorie-counting spread across the day a bit cumbersome for me.

I realize that I am getting around 300 calories on my fast day, and not the 500. Is that OK; I mean, I am not messing up the diet, am I?

Thanks for the great forum.

best wishes

Absolutely fine, pben!

I try and get under 200 calories for the day in my evening meal, so that I can join my wife at dinner.

I figure the more stress for the body's cells, the better!
Not at all - in fact, there are some who do not take in any calories for the 36 hours! There's a thread around here some where for that! I sometimes go way under, too. Weight loss slows down (for some) if they do not eat up to their TDEE on nonfast days, so take care there. Otherwise, carry on!
Absolutely fine to stay under the limit. I frequently do my fasts on just a 50cal soup or a couple of boiled eggs :) But, if I feel hungry then I'll eat a bit more - usually resulting in me feeling even more hungry and wishing I'd just had my soup ;)
Phew, that is good to hear, thank you all for your replies.

Yes, It is easier to fast without eating anything during the day, but when evening comes, then I need to eat or I get a terrible headache, In fact the onset of the headache tells me it is time to eat!

thanks again!

On the contrary, is it ok to go to 600 for a woman? I got up to 599 yesterday by complete accident! :(

At what point does the fast stop being a fast and become a normal day?!
Hi Mazza my calorie intake early on with this woe was probably over 600 the I quickly got it down sometimes about 400 it didn't impede my loss but reign it in as soon as possibly :clover: Sue

30% calorie reduction would be two days a week trying to diet, 5:2 is two days a week with 75% calorie reduction.

There isn't really a graduated shift from one to the other, 600-800 calorie/day VLCDs are accepted treatments for obese people for a few weeks.

This is a good question, because usually we dont eat our evening meal until after 7pm on a fast day but I am up at 6am the next day and usually have my breakfast at 6.30ish on a non fast day, so its not even a full 12 hours after dinner - is this going to effect my weight loss do you think?

Not really, you're still creating the same weekly deficit of calories by restricting 2 days to 500/600. Longer periods without food within that may have additional benefits, hence the 16:8 eating people, but for straight weight loss I think you're ok.
Good news :) I am thinking of trying the 16:8 method when I am on holiday if I can
Can someone tell me what the 16:8 method is? I keep hearing it but am not sure how it works :)
In short, it means only eating in a time window of 8 hours, so basically for most it means skipping breakfast and not eating anything after dinner any more ;-)
Hello, just registered.

I have been doing the slimming world diet plan and over the yerars have found it very successful for losing weight. Watching how you eat, and using sin values etc.

My partner brought home the book 5:2 dieting book, and it appealed to me straight away. The thought that i could carry on and eat as normal except for fasting days seemed a good idea !

I must add, I find this diet appears to run very close to the slimming world diet that I was following previously.

A tipical day's diet plan, breakfast consisting of half tin of baked beans and tomatoes mixed with some drops of wocester sauce to add more flavour, 2 rashers of grilled bacon, with either 1 or 2 poached eggs. Rest of day fill up on fruit. My evening meal would generally be pasta, or a low fast meal with plenty of veg.

On the 5:2 which I have been doing now for the 3rd week, and have as previously maintained a weight loss each week, with the exception that on this 5:2 diet I have been ( in my eyes naughty boy ) for eating the odd bag of crisps and biscuits, which with slimming world is a no no for the sins values !

I startd to fast Mondays and Thursday and found it difficult.
So now I fast on a Monday from as soon as I wake, which is normally 5.30 - 6.00am, I did try and fast all day and evening, but found it uncomfortable, so now i nibble throughout the day on small cherry tomatoes etc. And drink plenty of water. Its quite strange but by Monday evening I actually have gone past wanting a big meal !

I then fast on a Tuesday too, I have a very light breakfast 6.30am of 2 rashers grilled bacon, half a tin tomatoes, 1 poached egg. drink water throughout day, and occasional coffee or tea, about 2.00pm have a banana and tomato's and then nothing except water until 6.30pm when I riligously weigh my self after which I eat normally until the following Monday.

So far I have been losing between 1 - 3 lbs a week, though the last 2wks have been 1lb !

Is there anything wrong with this method ?

My draw back, I seem to be suffering with a lot of indigestion and heart burn.

I started the slimming world diet 21st May 2013 weighed in at 14st 11 Lbs. ( I do the sliming world diet myself) Started the 5:2 diet 3wks ago, To date I am 13st 9lbs !
