Very easy snack
14 Sep 2013, 09:01
I have three apple trees in my garden - one that produce nothing, one that don' t taste much and get ugly brown spots and one with the most glorious apples. I call it my Snow White tree since it produce wonderful red skinned apples and if you polish them, the shine.

But, we are very bad when it comes to eat them all, so yesterday I decided to make dried apple slices. Have a hot air oven (which helps) that I set at + 100C, peeled, de-cored and sliced the apples as thinly as I could (ought to get a mandolin), placed them on baking sheets on a tray, sprinkled with ground cinnamon and placed in the over with the door slightly open. Turned them when they where dry on the top and the whole process took round 3 hrs I think. The result was crispy or chewy (depending on the thickness of the slices, and quite delicious. Had a small bow while watching The Fast and the Furious 1 :-D

They didn't keep their crispiness overnight though (not sure why) but now I have three trays with slices in the oven and I might store them in a tin can.

Have no clue on how many calories each slice has, but it can't be many. Although I wouldn't binge on them on fasting days

Sounds yummy! I have apple trees too, but Bramley cooking type, which would not work with your method. I love them, but this year will be spreading most of the bounty to family and friends unless anyone can come up with low carb/sugar way of using them up! Apple crumble and apple pies are just too tempting! (Will make a few though - autumn wouldn't be the same without the odd treat!).

Dahna - how about juicing them and if they are sweet enough make a granite? Maybe just a tiny dash of calvados in the juice? Or - the most obvious, bake them. Filled with crushed nuts and a little bit of honey to keep it together. Are you "allowed" butter? If so, make a mix of nuts, butter and honey and maybe some crushed dried chilies - anjou or chipotle as well?
Tarte Tartine must be out of the question....poor you.

If you put a couple of sugar cubes in the tin and make sure it's air right, the apple slices should stay crispy. It sounds like a lovely snack :)

Wolfie,
I thought you had made a typing mistake with the "granite" so googled it, and you know what, I am going to keep more of my apple crop than I thought! I have never tasted it but it sounds yum! As for butter etc. yes I eat it freely - the only things I try to restrict are sugar and carbs, but I do have them for treats. Thanks for the ideas. Great excuse to buy a bottle of Calvados.

Dhana, happy I could help and hey - honey is sweet but nog sugar - yayyy.....
if you are not using all the apple use at once, you can freeze it in plastic bags or containers, enough to make the amount of granite you want any given time.

Family dinner for 12 tonight, glad it's not fasting day

I thought that when people say they stay away from sugar, they mean refined sugar. Although it is hard to bake with anything else -I have tried to make a mudcake from brown sugar, it didn't work. I also thought that brown sugar as well as honey was more healthy??? If you can call sweet things healthy LOL.

OK, creamy apple pie (new recipe) in the oven, not to cook a barbecue sauce. Just shy of 3 hrs to go.....
