I haven't started it either but am intrigued now! And Lil there aren't any spoilers upthread ...

I always struggle with books written in the third person. I LOVED the twist at the end which was entirely unexepcted but a bit 'doh'. I agree the 'end, end' was a bit of a cop out but overall one of the best books I have read this year.
I read it, not my usual thing at all but I really enjoyed it, I thought it was a real page turner. Not sure there was an end to it, possibly the author ran out of ideas which was disappointing. But my goodness, what a weird mind being able to come up with all those twists. Thank you to whoever it was that recommended this book.
Just finished this one. Not sure whether I enjoyed it or not. Started off really enjoying it then just wanted somebody to tell me what happened at the end, which as others have said was a total cop out.
Did I miss the December read?

I enjoyed the book, especially the really horrible characters, but found the end to be a complete cop out.
I think I've missed the December choice as well Madmois

I don't think it was decided yet and with SD out of action at the moment, we might have to self organise!
On the last vote the runners up were The Cuckoo's Calling Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling), and The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. Anyone know how to set up a voting system?

Just bumping this to see if anyone has any ideas. What Karen said.
Silverdarling, if you see this, hope you're ok. Looking forward to having you back running our book club when you're ready. Meanwhile, I'm sure we can cobble something together and keep it going on your behalf, it was such a great idea. Thank you.
What do do fancy reading? Any ideas? Thanks

I think both books had equal votes. What if we did Cuckoo's Calling for December and The Luminaries for January? @Silverdarling, if you do happen to read this, if you just announce it, I'm sure we will all obey!
I would say - Cuckoo's Calling for December - the Luminaries sounds fascinating, but is a reeeeaaally long read - in other words ideal for that period after Christmas, when nothing seems to be happening ... So CC would be better I think for around the Christmas period when people will be really busy and easily distracted, and need a read that it is easy to dip in and out of.
@Wendy darling and all - thanks for your comments and good wishes. I am in the middle of applications, which have to be in by Monday, and hopefully all should be over in the next 10 days. I have popped on the forum from time to time, but trying to limit this as I'm a real procrastinator and displacement activity merchant, so must avoid!
If someone can do a '5:2 book club: December's book is CC' ! I'd be very grateful (and ask Moogie to 'sticky' it - this gets it put at the top of the 'non diet forum' with a little triangle next to it.

I have just finished reading Gone Girl. I don't usually read thrillers but someone had lent it to me before it was chosen so it seemed meant to be. I have to say I have really enjoyed it.I thought the plotting/timeline was really clever, a bit like the Time Travellers wife. I really don't know how authors think of these plots. I felt the insight as to how the mind of a psychopath works was really compelling.I thought the end was quite chilling.
Possible spoiler coming up!
Did anyone else think she could be intending to kill herself or possibly all of them as her final punishment of Nick for not truly being as she wanted him to be - given away by that last remark of his.
I have a suggestion for January's book. My book group have just read The Husband's Secret - it's not too long and quite readable and gives food for thought.

Hi Lil,
I agree with everything you say but as stated earlier, I really disliked the vulgarity and obscene language but then I'm just an old fusspot! I was really disappointed by the ending but I suppose you could also say that the twist was what the author was trying to achieve.
I would like to re-nominate a book I mentioned for October which is 'THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS' by ML Steadman. It is set in Australia so our antipodean sisters may enjoy it............some reviews below...........
"ML STeadman swept me to a remote island nearly a quarter of a century ago, where a lighthouse keeper and his wife make a choice that shatters many lives, including their own........This heartbreaking debut is a gem of a book that you'll have trouble putting down............a moving tale, prepare to weep".............
Hope @Silverdarling comes back soon to keep us all in order,
Ballerina x

Oh Ballerina, I like the sound of your Light Between Oceans...sounds intriguing!
I've still not finished, but I've gotten to the twist. I didn't see that coming. It seems a bit extreme for a cheating husband, ne? I spent the first half of the book thinking "if these guys get proper jobs, they'll be fine". Sure, Nick is a bit of a douche and fake Amy is tres annoying (mind you, real Amy is a frickin' psychopath)...
I'm reading it on kindle on my iPhone and have no idea how much i have left. haha. All I know how to do is flip pages back and forth.

Sounds like you are nearly done! I enjoyed it very much, but thought the end was a bit of a cop out.
Gone Girl movie. This is from a list of pop culture events AVClub is excited about for 2014:
Gone Girl (October 3)
David Fincher is one of our best directors. Gillian Flynn’s novel was the sort of trashy, compelling beach read that made for a pretty good book but could become a stellar movie. Rosamund Pike is someone who’s been primed for major stardom for a while. And Ben Affleck is Ben Affleck. Combine all of those elements, and it’s a film that could elevate its source material as much as The Godfather did.
