DECEMBER BOOK CLUB
30 Nov 2013, 17:38
hi everyone, Silverdarling has asked if someone would post this thread for the December Book Club, so, here I am. The nominated book is Cuckoos Calling and I will get back to you all soon with an author and other details. Hope things go well for you@Silverdarling next week and can @Moogie please sticky this, not sure what that means but SD has asked...

"One of the best crime novels I have ever read (Alex Gray)

Everytime I put this book down, I looked forward to reading more. Galbraith writes at a gentle pace, the pages rich with description and with characters that leap out of them. I loved it. He is a major new talent (Peter James)

Just once in a while a private detective emerges who captures the public imagination in a flash. And here is one who might well do that . . . There is no sign that this is Galbraith's first novel, only that he has a delightful touch for evoking London and capturing a new hero. An auspicious debut (Daily Mail)

In a rare feat, Galbraith combines a complex and compelling sleuth and an equally well-formed and unlikely assistant with a baffling crime in his stellar debut . . . Readers will hope to see a lot more of this memorable sleuthing team (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

Laden with plenty of twists and distractions, this debut ensures that readers will be puzzled and totally engrossed for quite a spell "

Thanks Ballerina and Silverdarling. I downloaded it sometime ago, so a good excuse to read it.

Hi all,
I'm still reading November's book but will get a copy of CC and add it to the heap of books by my bedside. Think I need an earlier bedtime.

Will download it later.

Are there any young wizards in it? I understand that the author is JK Rowling under her invisibility cloak!

Yes, I just realised that too! I might read it on that basis alone; it had some good reviews.

Oh lovely @Ballerina. I will download it and start reading...at some point! At the moment I'm reading Stephen King "On Writing" which is quite interesting...but I could do with a good crime thriller right now!

Happy reading everyone :-)

I really like the character 'Strike' so far. He seems misunderstood. I can see him in his own TV series......

Yes @rawkaren I can see Strike becoming a TV character but I can't think of an actor who could play him. Hmm difficult!

SPOILER ALERT!!

I've just put that warning there in case I blurt something out. Basically, I've finished the book today. The verdict? Yes, I really enjoyed it. The characters were all written so well and the main two; Strike and Robin were very likeable. I had a feeling about the culprit but didn't know why they would have done it. Well, all is explained!!

I would definitely recommend this read and give it :like: :like: :like: out of a possible 5

Loved it. On the face of it, the crime and storyline seemed like it was going to be fairly unremarkable. However I really liked the narrative and the depth of the characters, both of which really bought it to life. I thought it was certainly a London I know and her attention to detail was quite remarkable. Nice classy whodunnit.

I couldn't have put it better myself. Do you think she'll start a series of books with those characters?
