Its the middle of the night here in the U.K and I can't sleep, so I've been browsing my holiday albums. Anything to get my mind off the miserable weather we are having here.

So I thought that a thread to make suggestions for places to visit, maybe some pictures of places you have visited OR a link to THAT place where you would love to go, whether a castle, the coast, or a humble cottage. Stick it up here and give us all something to look forward to this summer (or winter) where ever you are.

My suggestion for a must see before you die place has to be Plitvic Lakes in Croatia. We went there expecting to see a small valley with a stunning waterfall, What we didn't expect was to spend a whole day traversing a whole valley of lakes, coloured from emerald green to aquamarine blue, with a myriad waterfalls from stupendous catarcts to tinkling little trickles. The picture below is one I took myself, its not a brochure picture. If it doesn't show full size please click on it.

Wow! That's really gorgeous!

I'm currently obsessed with France, and can't wait to go back (August!). We're accompanying BruceE on a business trip to Brussels in March, and we'll be spending 3 nights in Amsterdam before that. So right now we're finalizing that itinerary and starting to dream about August. Hubby has a week long conference in Paris, so we are probably going to spend a week gallivanting about northern France, Normandy and possibly Brittany before heading to "work" in Paris. He would like to see if he can spot the white cliffs of Dover from the French coastline. I've told him prospects don't look very good for that, but if he really wants that, we can try. I'm personally thrilled about seeing Mont St Michel in person. I first saw pictures of that when I was a little girl, in a world atlas my father gave me. I've wanted to visit it ever since :-)
You can do a day trip from Calais to Dover as a footpassenger in a few hours if you want. Just get off the other end and find somewhere for a proper English afternoon tea or fish and chips, before boarding again and heading back to France. You may need to sort out visa and such before hand, but its easily do-able in a day. Crikey we went from North Wales to Disneyland Paris, spent a whole day in the park, and the evening in the village, self drive and back home again in 36 hours. so a ferry crossing, just for afternoon tea is possible.
Oh I bet he'd see the cliffs from the deck of a ferry! LOL Maybe I will suggest that then. I've been being a bit selfish, not wanting to divert too much time away from Brittany to see something he might not be able to see. I would love to see more menhirs and standing stones. I know the ones in France don't compete with Stonehenge, but still - very cool.

We're looking at going to Scotland in 2015. He's got a big project there that will be finishing up then, so we can go with him to the launch party :-)
@Tracieknits The Mont St Michel is wonderful, you'll love it!
@Julieathome Amazing photo, really beautiful.

My dream holiday is to go to visit all the ancient sites of Rome, Ostia, Pompeii, Herculaneum etc. I love Roman history and have been longing to go on a guided tour of all the sites for years. Unfortunately no-one else in my family or friends is interested in going with me. It's expensive too, so I'm a) saving up, b) slimming down (all those hills in Rome!) c) summoning my confidence to risk going alone. Unless anyone here wants to join me?
 Julie that looks stunning and so calm + peaceful
Would love to go to Australia, America, New Zealand, + Rome + Italy, I could go on.
But would really love to go to a 5star spa hotel in Greece and with the sunshine, beach, really good food and good wine maybe a ladies only dream holiday

Closer to home and back down to earth I've never been to Northumbria, Jersey, Guernsey, isle of man or the Scilly isles any of these in our mid summer of course ah dreams.
Wow Julie that looks amazing.
My fav place on this planet is New Zealand, it's like the UK in places but with better weather, and they drive on the night side of the road. Been twice- family, but I would love to see some USA only transmitted through LAX once. I would also love to visit one of the poles, do a safari, the amazon, Pompeii, Dubai!, petronas towers, New York.
A beach hut on a white beach with crystal clear, blue water and a hunky waiter, bringing me mojito's on tap. Wake up Caroline
Oh dear too many to name. But I'd also like to see if my father is still alive and kicking in Jamaica.
The best trip went to Vietnam - for many different reason :) But the very best vacation we have ever had as a couple was the one we took over Christmas/NY 2012/2013 to Fort Myers in Florida. We rented a quite posh 2 bedroom apartment just before the bridge over to Sanibel/Captiva islands with a lanai just above the beach and lovely pool areas - pure magic    .

Needless to say, we are planning to go back for vacation, sadly American immigration rules make it almost impossible for a Swede to snow bird there.
@Carorees That's a trip I would love to do as well! But we're waiting until the 13 year old is finished with school. It's not a trip I think I could manage in the summer time - I don't do well in heat or too much sun.
New York for me then travelled on to Key West. The buzz of New York is amazing and Key West was just mental!! Anything goes.
Paphos in Cyprus is another favourite of mine. Beautiful beaches, scenery, food and people.
I want to hire an RV and spend a month on the West Coast area of America. I would take a month and start at Los Angeles and head north through San Francisco, over the Golden Gate bridge even if it meant going the wrong way somehow. Then carry on up the Coast Highway, its supposed to be amazing that drive. All the way nearly up to the Oregon border so we could see some Giant Redwoods. From there we would turn inland and skirting Lake Tahoe we would end up in Las Vegas, just to say we had been there. From there to the Grand Canyon and then on to San Diago (I want to see the Tar Pits). Then head north again and end up back in Los Angeles.
The drive down the Croatian coast, the Dalmation Coast Highway, was beautiful. I would like to do that again.
I was lucky enough to live my dream when we went to Venice 10 years ago, it was magical. @Carorees on the same trip we did Rome and Pompeii, you won't be disappointed when you do get there.
Would love to tour the UK and Canada. @Wolfie I loved Vietnam and Cambodia.
Yes far too many places to go
Gos was great for a relatively cheap holiday with fantastic weather and good food. Sri Lanka was one amazing spectacle after another. Switzerland in summer or winter is stunning. Would love to go to Borneo next.

That would be one very expensive trip!!! Might be better off with renting a hybrid and paying for hotel rooms :-)
